I have a Bark Commander 12" from Surftech with some dings that need repairing. They started as small cracks that were soft to the touch. When I started to cut them away I found a small cavity underneath, revealing another layer of glass. It seems like there was a bubble that formed in the hot coat, leaving certain areas more vulnerable to cracking. I don’t know if this is the Tuflite construction, but those boards usually have a Tuflite logo somewhere on the board. This one has a label that says “Pro Elite”, probably similar to Tuflite but maybe a little lighter. I can’t find much information on this construction online.
What is the best way to go about filling these cavities? Standard Q-Cell and fiberglass patch? Fill with epoxy resin or Solarez and a fiberglass patch?
I would say yes to standard Q-Cell and fiberglass patch using epoxy resin. You could finish up with appliance epoxy white spray paint from Lowes. Its not a true 2-part epoxy but its pretty tough.
It seems that’s only finish coat that chip off, fiber coat seems intact. If so, scuff it and fill with lighweight putty, sand flat and spray paint. This kind of finish is lightweight mastic on fiber + epoxy layer then paint. If main lam is not well prep, fully cure, thoroughly scuff and cleaned, finish can chip off easily.
I repair many boards with this kind of tech i bet fiberglass is not needed and harder to do clean here. I bet board is still waterproof here because that’s only the thick finish mastic coat that chip off the main fiber skin because of not care when prep lam for overcoating during build, not appropriate mastic and too thick layer for compensate not “flat” job. The layer of makeup is thick on those build. They use cheap easy to sand mastic and nice paint to have a nice finish LOL.
