Mark’s Thick vs. Thin Fin thread has taken a whole new direction, as so many threads do. It has been suggested by simonc (I believe) that we give everyone the opportunity for input when defining the terms of surfboard design. Keith has already pointed out that we have a glossary. But, let’s let this thread be for community input on terms. Hopefully, once a concesus is reached each term can be added or amended in the glossary.
pigment - colored resin with an opaque finish
tint - colored resin with a transparent finish
pigment… (In most cases here on Sways) What you add to resin to get color.
precisely my point…when discussing and purchasing tints/pigments, there doesn’t seem to be any uniformity. what i refer to as “tint” and “pigment”, another may refer to as “pigment” and “opaque pigment” respectively…so if acting solely on an assumption that everyone is on the same wavelength, it’s easy to be way outta whack. i think some people actually try to make these things confusing.
“chord length”
“a.o.a.”
???
both seem to be thrown around here on fin threads.
“g10” , also ?
there’s definately some jargon that flies from time to time .
I don’t want to confuse more, but lately I have been using ‘pigment powder’.
If I add a small quantity I end up with transparent coloured resin, which I would call tinted.
If I use a lot it becomes opaque, solid colour, non transparent.
Is there such a description as a ‘solid tint’?
…see what i mean…it’s hopeless.
I agree, let’s go…
The usage taught me by my color teacher:
They’re all pigments, some are opaques, some are tints.
Can an ape hang heels? Can a leper hang five?
Seems to me that Keith’s definition in the glossary is pretty clear and descriptive.
KeithMelville (Monday, April 12, 2004, 11:56): PIGMENT: finely ground solids which are the basis of color in paint; pigment is the fine solid particles used to give color and opacity. A color additive put in resin to produce a solid or opaque color. Pigments contain solids, and can be used to make a resin opaque. The higher the proportion of pigment, the more opaque the resin. The only pure pigment is white. See also tint, transparent.
"chord length"
You can measure fin chord lengths parallel to the bottom surface of the board, from the fin front edge to the fin rear edge.
“a.o.a.”
AOA is short for angle of attack. Defined as the angle between the fin and the water flow. A fin on the center of the surfboard, when the rider goes straight, has an AOA of zero degrees.
“g10” , also ?
A brand of epoxy-glass laminate. Commonly used in computer circuit boards. Easily purchased already laid up, ready to cut and foil into fins. Comes in any color as long as you like puke green.
