Swaylocks format, last message first

Hi Mike, This site is absolutely tops! I’ve learned so much here it’s amazing. I know you are always up for input about the site format so I just wanted to say that I’m having trouble getting used to the last message coming up first when a thread is selected. I may be alone here but keeping things in the natural order of occurance makes more sense to me because it keeps the thought progression is order or at least it seems so to me. The new change of having the whole thread come up at the message one has choosen is great. Just put this one in you hat and do what ever you think is best. Have a good session, Rich

I’m with you, Rich. If whole threads were readable “latest down” that would be difficult, but it’s worse than that. The current format breaks threads so that answers to posts don’t necessarily lead or follow the posts which they refer to. The new Swaylocks bulletin board format is mixed. The index page is in outline form with answers following questions. But the thread pages are arranged with the latest thread on top, and earlier threads below it in reverse chrolological order. I’ve participated in similar bulletin boards which do work. The indexes show headings in reverse chronological order, and the thread pages appeared in chronological order. Posters know to address their posts to specific earlier posts and posters. Likewise, readers know to look for these references. The default Swaylocks format tells a poster, “click here to answer this post”. The poster assumes his remarks need not be addressed to the leading post. But after posting, the poster’s remarks appear out of order, appearing to refer to unrelated posts. I know, I can defeat this format by turning on cookies. I surf the web anonymously for a reason. There are demonstrable risks associated with cookies. I won’t do it. I probably have company. I certainly hope so. I can keep using the format in its current form, but it’s not optimal for me. I prefer the old Swaylocks style by far.

Hi Mike, Like John Mel and I agreed this morning. Simple is better. It’s all about continuity. We all know you’ll do the right thing, Mike. You just have to practice on us, don’t you? Mahalo, Rich

I think we should be all set now. Enjoy, Mike
