Sways Coffee Table Book....

As surfers we all grew up with glossy magazines to ooooh and arrrrgh about, looking at our heroes in amazing situations…

It seems to me that this sort of thing has really died out (IMO)…

Who amongst us would like a coffee table book of Swaylocks own imagery, 1 or 2 pictures per page, no stories, no ads, just a sentence to describe the picture and credit the photographer.

Original pictures taken by Swaylockians, shaping, sunsets over oceans, finished boards, grinning faces, kids getting stoked, BBQs, get togethers, stuff ups…

Stiff cover, 36 printed pages…

Thinking out aloud now, send images in (High Res), mods to pick the best, get the book printed, send out all over the world, maybe get a stack put up at your local newsagent…

How much would you pay for this, would you buy something like this…it would NOT be available in Digital format…

Part proceeds to Mike for the site costs…

Thoughts, Ideas, I’ll do the work, I just need some interested parties…could be an annual thingy too…Best of Sways 2007…2008…2100

Getting quotes now…

PS: Don’t tell Mike, this is our secret…

Is 200 dpi ok ?

Is it ok if they have been published previously ?

Are helmets allowed ?

So many questions !

I’d personally prefer non published and a min of 300dpi…

great idea hicksy!

Special issue?

SUP’er CLUB!

BOARDPORN!

FINFUN!

PLANERS!

FOAMFETISH!

WOODIES!

BIG WOODIES!! (With special helmet section??)

Of course, Ben (Chip) would HAVE to be foto editor…

Hicksey, How much would you need to ask? 40 bucks? 50 bucks? Would that be enough to cover the costs? World wide distribution? Advertising or no advertising? Format like Surfers Journal? Any editorial content?

Great move Hicksy,

I’d pay $40 to $50 for it. All going to a good cause!

Let us know when you want us to start sending you pics.

Sounds like a great idea.

I just bought a book of Gordon’s Photos from the 60s/70s, there are some really great images I especially like the section on the early surf shops, shapers, and boards. For my birthday my girlfriend got me one of underwater photography, beautiful to look at an inspiring, nature is much better at designing fins than me. I plan to use a picture of a squids frill to help me design a set of keel fins.

I don’t think that there is anything like this that documents the shaper/surfer culture, I would definitely already have it if there were. I really hope you can do this be nice to see an eclectic mix of eccentric grass root shapers in there shacks.

My girlfriend’s dad runs a small publishing business here in the UK, mostly he does books about local history, coastal walks and wildlife etc, but I’m sure he would be able to help in someway even if its just advise.

PM if we can lend a hand in anyway.

I’m in Hicksy. Whenever and however much it costs.

There are so many great photos on this site, I know it will

be an outstanding book.

Thanks for the support everyone,

I can send files anywhere in the world with the printing specs so all copies will be the same stock…more of that sort of detail will happen if the interest is there…

Here’s some more info to get the ball rolling…

Send your pics to grant.hicks@central.wa.edu.au

I have a 10Mb limit…send pics individually if you have to…it’s no problem…

Pics must be minimum of 300DPI 1024x720 or thereabouts…

I’ll set up a website for the Mods to judge…

What ever comes out of that will be the best of the best, only 44 of the best of the best will be selected, no correspondance will be… blah blah, you know the rules…

Once we pick the best I will weild my magic and will get it published… again no corrr…blah…blah…

It will be cheaper than AU$40.00 to produce plus international postage…cheaper if you get a local publisher…

I think this could really go off…Sort of like a Sways Yearbook…

I’ve got quotes in now and it looks very very doable for a minimum of 1000 copies…

If you need any graphic design help with layouts/text…PM me, would love to help!

Hey Squiddy, Thanks for your offer, I’m a Digital Designer by day…

Roy, fluro green wetties and bright orange helmets are a must…

Looking at around $35.00 plus postage at this stage, not too sure about world wide but if anyones got any ideas, as I said this could be printed locally…I would prefer no advertising to keep it pure, haven’t seen a SJ for a while, no editorial content, other than a preface…

Mike, If you have a hi res Swaylocks graphic, could you send me one…

I would prefer the pictures be less than a couple of years oldish…

Working on the master template as we speak…he he he

g’day Hicksy, this is very exciting mate!

just worried that maybe 44 pages might not be big enough, well hey NO amount of pages would be big enough! but maybe make it a neat 100 pages? just a thought, shouldn’t add all that much to the cost of a book I wouldn’t think, just think of all the 1000’s of amazing pics we have all seen just here on this site alone, great idea anyhow mate, i’ll see what I can rustle up!!!

Now heres a money spinner Hicksy ! Great idea and count me in.

Will artwork be included cuz some of the paintings etc have been brilliant ?

A book of quoteable quotes, best threads, This Years Worldwide Design Advancements( to congratulate the individual creative spirit of Swayfolk), (rather than guessing or making up history later) , even pics of some of the rough nuts that inhabit Sways (Mods and Members) would be good too.

( How can I stalk you guys without a reasonable photo?)

Pics are nice, maybe a rundown on the shapers life and lifestyle could be added to each picture ?

Or not.

i’d definitely want a copy!

great idea Hicksy and many thanks!

I agree, some of the artwork is sick. Also, I’d like to see a section with everybody’s board logos. Well, maybe that could be another coffee table book…

id buy a copy of that.

using this self-publishing site might be a good idea, its pretty easy and cheap, and they keep the digital file of the book and then print on demand:

Bumped… how about making this one a sticky thread?

I’d defininitely buy one… Can I just give you a link to my blog and let you pick your own pictures? Or do you want the virtual “hard copy” emailed to you just to keep it simple?

More important question, how do I determine the DPI of a given photo? I shoot jpgs with a 6MP Nikon D50 with the size and quality set to maximum.

I would like the original image at it’s highest setting, a brief sentence about the photo and the photographers name … from there I can work out how to display it…

Email to grant.hicks@central.wa.edu.au

Got the first one the other day…

One down…
