system 3 vs. resin research

i’m curious as to peoples experiences with system 3 epoxy. i’m glassing a 9 ft board. i can get system three right in my town, or order resin research from across the border and pay more and wait for it. is it worth it?

i think i’d rather use rr because i’ve heard great things about it and additive f. anybody have great things to say about system 3? is there an equivilant additive for sanding etc?

cheers,

nicholas

Systems 3 is good epox…RR is Great epox.

I’ve found the RR epoxy easier to work with by far over system 3. The system three took to long to cure enough to handle, melted when I sanded it and began to yellow its first day out. Not to mention price. I’m in nanaimo as well, if you need some tips, Personal message me. cheers.

Seabase now has RR.

i knew you were out there.

My first board was glassed with System 3 - SB112…

I see it regularly at the home of the guy who bought it…

It bears little resemblance to the board when I made it…

It has since browned out SIGNIFICANTLY…

Almost a shame…

That board had such rich, vibrant wood colors…

Now the wood differences are almost indistiguishable…

And, I always kept it out of direct UV exposure…

I’m currently extremely pleased with Resin Research Epoxy, and it predictability…

Is that the first board your company made or the first one you made period?!? That’s way nice. Is the yellowing due to UV? I’ve wondered for a while now, since poly is better than epoxy for gloss coats and is UV resistant, why not do an outer layer of poly on top of the epoxy?

All of my boards are glassed with RR. I’ve tried others and they really do not compare.

I’ve seen the poly gloss coat over the epoxy. Don’t do it. It will look great at first, then begin peeling away.

Acrylic can be buffed to a nice shine and bonds very well to the epoxy. That is how I finish all of my boards.

I know that JJP has polished out the RR with great results.

Good luck

For the BEST clear-coat, I take my boards to an auto paint shop and have them clearcoated with a product like Imron…

Not cheap, but super shiny and super scratch resistant…

It costs me about $35 per board…

Howzit Paul, Actually $35 is cheap compared to a gloss and polish finish these days.Aloha,Kokua

Family deal…

My nephew is one of the top auto painters in the area…

Paul, I’ve been thinking about doing the same. But I thought they used other products for the clear coat. Like the 2 part urethane? Any idea what I should offer an auto painter who is in no way related to me and probably anoyed to have to deal with something other than cars? thx

My understanding is that Imron is a two part paint system…

What to offer…???..

Car painters = Nascar + Beer…

You figure what’s fair…
