hey all. as an amateur surfboard shaper and grafitti artist, i’m wondering : can i just lay down some of my trusty old Belton Mellowtone spraypaint on the foam and laminate it with no problem? or why not? i.e., what’s so different about the paint they use in airguns that keeps it from blurring, causing de-lam, etc…?
JP- Look for any water based paint in rattle cans, these are safe on foam. You can use some acrylics but you better test them on foam scraps with your resin. Alternative is to glass your board, hotcoat and sand it. Now you can use a wider range of paints on the sanded surface then clearcoat to protect your artwork. Tom S.
follow-up question : anybody know a brand of spray paint that works in most colors?
I’ve used normal spray paint on the foam and it bleeds a little, but i was doing punk-looking messy template sprays so it didnt matter anyways. Last one i did, i sprayed the clear spray over the paint and i didnt seems to bleed at all. I havent had any problems with delam from the normal spray paint on the foam either. http://www.fiberglasssupply.com/pdf/blanks/FSBlankCatalog.pdf
