Not only really thin, but really warped. Unless its the photos distortion, no symmetry at all.
I think at this point, I might just make a practice blank; just whittle it down to nothing just to get the feel of the tools. It’s only a blank, what $60.00 at this point? Work on your skills, and start fresh with the next one. You’ll be happier with the board you envisioned, rather than one with goofs that will always bug you.
Also, too thick at the stringer. I like the tail to be uniform thickness as it wraps around.
yeah the pictures aren’t very good at all. I took them with my mac trying to hold it in the right place while trying to see what i was taking a picture of, but i get what your saying. I was worried about making really thin so i kinda avoided the tail area thats why the thickness is greater by the stringer. I also didn’t want to make the tail as thin as it was on the rails, but i guess these are the things you learn on your first shape.
yeah, you could make it a practice blank, but then it is your #1, so keep going. Carefully foil down the last inch or two of the stringer with your small block plane, surform, small sanding block, etc. As you move across the tail, think small rail bands with a small sanding block as you wrap around the end of the tail. Once you take the stringer down to match the thickness you have in the rail, it won’t look so weird. Thin, though, for sure, but that will just make it responsive!
I always blend the very end of the tail into the side rail as a last step, fine tuning. Just take it slow and easy, don’t give up…
I agree with TedG pull down the stringer to match the rest, blend it down so that there’s a similar curve from the tail going up as it is from the stringer going out to the rail. But I would also look at the way the right side has a bit more rocker than the left. You should make it the same on each side first. Give it a good look and take it slow.
thanks for all the encouragement guys I’m going to keep going and not give up. Never really planned just scraping it I want to keep my first board even if it is a piece of crap
