Tail Width!?!?

I’m currently shaping a 6’0 board which is 18.5" wide and has a nose width of 11" (12" down) It is designed for relatively small surf (3 to 6 ft) and I’m not sure as to what tail width it should be! (measured 12" up from tail) As I am shaping it for myslef, I’m open to ideas! What’s your fav. Tail width ???

I like wide tails for small surf. Say 14" to 16". A board with your demensions would work well with a 14" to 14 1/2" tail I think.

for that size board try around 13.5" in the tail, give or take a little depending on how it looks on the template.

scotts got a point. most of my shortboards are in the 14-14.5" range for tails, but i like a little wider outline, 19- 19 3/4" center. draw a couple outlines on your template in diff. color pencils and check it out.

Roderick - Noodle has helped some guys tweek their templates and seems to know what looks right. You might try asking him for one of his template formulas.

It has 2.8" forward offset and a 4" square stern. Your 11" nose sounds really cool, but takes all curve out of the forward outline. Nice job Noodle! Roderick… did you get that?

Don’t guess, measure and average the boards you see in a shop. I ride 6’1" x 18 3/8 with a 14 1/2" tail 12" from tail. This is my overall shortboard for waves up to 6ft east coast waves (hollow, lack power 90% of time). It’s not overly loose at all. If you ride hollow waves that have power go for 14" tail as a wider tail may cause the board to over or under react depending on bottom shape and wave conditions. What shape you make the tail (rounded pin, round tail, squash, etc.) also will determine the size of tail.
