Tape won't stick!!!

Wish I could say I was in a sticky situation, but the lack thereof is really what’s giving me trouble.

I went over my EPS blank with lightweight spackling (a little old, potential problem?) and then lightly sanded it then covered the whole thing in a light coat of green acrylic paint (water based). Now I’m taping things up to go onto the more detailed airbrushing but I can’t find a tape that sticks!! I’ve never had this problem before. Usually it’s finding a tape that doesn’t stick too much! Ahhh!

So far I’ve gone through regular masking, painter’s blue, stickier green, and even tried scotch for kicks.

I also tried heating up the tape with a hair drier. Maybe need to heat up the board too?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Ryan, Make sure there isn’t any light paint dust on the board. A commercial tack cloth will pick up any surface dust, but won’t interfere with resins or tape. You also might try a light coat of clear acrylic paint from a spray can: the kind artists use. Most art supply stores sell them. Spray that where you are going to lay down the tape. It will also help protect the paint so you don’t pull up the paint when you pull up the tape.

Find Wood_Ogre’s post on making an epoxy-specific tack cloth.

And then do it exactly like he says.

Its not the temperature…

I have the same problem. EPS holds static electric charge much better than PU. This causes dust to stick to it really well. I dust the board really well with a brush before taping. Much more effective than just spraying air over it. If you can setup your lights correctly you can see when the amount of dust coming off the board starts to diminish. Sometimes I use a tack cloth after brushing that and it helps a lot too. I use medium-high adhesive tape also. Last thing, high humidity really impedes tape from sticking so don’t tape outside late in the day when the dew is settling.

Thanks a lot for all the quick input guys! The deck came out decent, bottom came out much better.

Wow! Nice job. Are you using a small pen style airbrush gun for the art?

Thanks stinkbug! Yeah, I’ve got an Iwata Eclipse HP-BCS that does the trick pretty well. I also picked up a cheap spray gun at home depot for the background green and the yellow.
