Hi. So cleared away a part of my backyard for a little area to shape. I want to hang up some tarp around the section and enclose it somewhat.
Any ideas where/how to get some tarp? Is it expensive? Any other ideas to use to make this work. Thanks.

go to the camping section at Wal-Mart…they have blue tarps that i think are pretty cheap.
No offence, but go anywhere but walmart… just for the principle. There old bs of made in usa - not, and their anti-union and sex discrimination, and…
If you are commited - go with the grey/silver ones, much stronger and longer life. Good luck
Howzit burning spear, Those blue tarps don't last very long that's why there're cheap. If you want a good tarp look for those heavy duty gray tarps used for party tents. The ones I used would last for about a year and a half and they were up the whole time. They are more expensive but when you consider the blue ones might last only 3 months as opposed to 18 months for the gray ones then the gray ones are cheaper in the long run. Also if you are using UV resin I don't think the blue ones block UV rays which will be a problem. Aloha,Kokua
if you where from florida there would be a great chance that you all ready have about 5 or 6 of those big blue tarps on your roof or sitting in the garage. they are fairly inexpensive and very durable. i use them in my shaping too. mostly i put it under my glassing stand and put sand on top.
Please support walmart. They sponsor Matt K’s tow in team I hear.
For someone that’s so concerned about the unfair treatment of walmart employees you have nothing to say about foam dust getting spewn into the air from an outside shaping and glassing area??? Get your tree huging prioritues straight.

precisely what i was thinking. and in sarcasm, i’d like to suggest Harbor Freight as an alternative to Wal-Mart…they’ve got good cheap tarps, too.

Word CMP!! outside shaping equals bad karma. As much as everyone wants to make their own boards and be their own shaper, if you cannot do it responsibly you have no buisness doing it at all, i mean it is bad enough already for the enviroment that we use polyester resin. I am not trying to make personal attacks but even as a novice shaper if i was a neighbor and saw someone shaping ouside like that i would tell them to knock that shit out.
Most obviously you are going to do it anyways so be extra careful with storage and spilling of resin on the ground. I don’t want my next fish lookin like this
Geez. You know, foam dust is pretty innocuous stuff. From a medical stand point, is it really that bad to shape outside? I mean, I shape inside, I vacuum the stuff up, then I put in in the garbage can, the garbage man ( I mean sanitary engineer) picks it up, and it eventually ends up in a big hole in the ground. Well, actually, here they burn the stuff in an industrial incinerator. What’s worse? My car spews out way worse stuff than foam dust, but it’s mostly invisible. Scary that we worry about harmless stuff that looks bad rather than invisible stuff that poisons us.
Any way, You can set up your tarp with a skeleton of pvc pipe from your local plumbing store. Your own little shaping quonset hut. If you feel guilty about airborne dust, bring the tarp down to the ground and run your shopvac while you shape.
so you don’t wear a mask when shaping, no respirator when using polyester resin? You seem to leave out some facts about your indoor shaping area.
Carbon monoxide inhalation from automobiles should be the last concern for you and your family.
Walmart sells tarps and sand paper and rubber gloves and respirators and at certain locations even resin and fiberglass. You might want to walk due to CO output of your vehicle, and don’t even think about the bus system, the pollution from those dirty diesels is the equivalent of driving for a year in your car. I love walmart employees and offer 20% discounts for any non union workers through May 2005.
Getting back to the original topic…
There’s lot’s of discount stores that carry tarps. Lumber yards too.You also might want to look into an EZ up awning. If there’s a Swap Meet or Flee Market in your area you may want to go and see what the vendors are using and ask some questions there. Wind is a big factor with traps.
Yep - also, don’t fall in love with tarps per se. Clear plastic, the heavy gauge stuff, is useful over a light frame of wood, pipe or conduit. Takes duct tape well, can be welded or heat shrunk if you have a heat gun, patience and are willing to put up with a few errors. I have a dome ir igloo -shaped greenhouse of similar construction.
Likewise the heat-shrink stuff many marine stores/boat sales and storage places use.
And then there are the small canopies you can buy, fairly cheap - http://www.oceanstatejoblot.com/instore/Default.asp shows one on the flyer/ad for $70 US. Lots of answers to your problem.
hope that’s of use
doc…
Hey Turbo, (off topic)
About two months ago i was in Winter Park outsidie Orlando visiting friends…could not beleive the scale of damage that still remains in that area. Every road there were several large trees still down and awaiting removal. one of every three had some form of roof construction still hapopening. Such a shame.

you should see what Fort Pierce looks like (just north of where both eyewalls hit)…total mess.
yeah we got hit real hard by charley in that side of town. we had a mirco burst that went through the woods in our back yard. it tore down every tree that was taller then 25 feet. i bet 75 to 80% of our neighborhood got a new roof.
i flew back from michigan in october and all over orlando all you could see for miles is blue roof tarps.
yeah…i heard a rumor that the new state flag for florida is just gonna be a blue tarp…we’ll see how this season treats us.
although, in spite of all the destruction…we got some REALLY GREAT SURF!!! i have this big goofy grin on my face right now just thinking about it.
Big thanks to the guys that helped out on this thread. I was even thinking of hanging the tarp in the garage. I just wanted to know if it would work.
As for the dust flying everywhere, OregonPeter is right, just as bad when the garbage man takes it away. Easy on the preachin’.
I would think if i have a tarp all the way around, it would contain most of the dust and i would sweep it up.
Suuuurf!
Thats like saying that littering is OK because it is going to end up somewhere anyway. Dumps are places where issues of runnoff have for the most part been taken care of. Shaping in your garage is definately not that bad because it allows you to sweep and vacume it up. it is just shaping in a spot where once the tarp is removed the foam and fiberglass will end up in the storm drain that is somewhat disturbing.
We are ALL polluters and we all have to accept the fact of this and think about how we can just have a minimal impact. Sorry about the preachin but this is my earth too.

If you want to be serious about it, just spend an 80 extra dollars and put up a screened room outside or make a more durable enclosure like the one for sale in San Diego advertised on this site. Do you have neighbors who will complain? Nothing like the sounds of the electric planer with foam flying and the noisy orbital sander with dust flying for the neighbors to call the authorities. You will be asked to shut down.
I only commented in regards to the union representative TaylorO’s walmart crack.
Didn’t mean to stir up the dust in a non OSHA approved hazardous work environment.
Maybe OP needs a new neighbor??
Thanks for the stoke guys!!! (sarcasm)
And why can’t you clean up on a tarp?
That shack for sale in SD looks great by the way! (not sarcasm)
