also , there have been some very insightful commments from Nick Carroll , and Rabbit Bartholomew in the commentary box , at the moment …good to have some intelligent commentators for a change !
the thruster brigade clearly show[ed] the merits of the design in super-hollow , full-speed-ahead tube rides there at Teahu’poo.
That said [well, typed !] , I truly hope someone like Daniel Thomson , Rasta , Dylan Longbottom , or Donovan take on the beast some time soon on a refined single fin , or a fish , or some other board , and show the merits of THOSE designs too !
yep, he was riding a quad. must be one of the very few times in almost twenty-five years of pro-surfing competition that an alternative to the thruster has been ridden. interesting. i wonder where it will go from here.
Taylor Knox has ridden a bonzer at the Pipe contest, and won a heat on it.
I felt the quad had more hold and a reasonable bottom turn, but I never felt as comfortable going hard rail to rail like I do on a thruster, or as comfortable going vert. But I have very good surfing friends who swear by them.
… I think Taylor Knox HAS ridden his 5 fin bonzers in contests , and never been shown in mags doing it ?!
I wonder …if he won a contest on one , if they would make a big thing out of it then ?
He is still IN this teahupoo comp …
IMAGINE him beating Slater to win it ? , on a 5 fin bonzer , in quality teahu’poo ?
…surely then there would be at least ONE photo of his board in a surf mag somewhere around the world ?
I would love to see Kelly on a bonzer at J-bay or somewhere like that , for a contest …
I wonder if he were to win an 8th world title this year , before the contests get to hawaii , if Al would make Kelly a bonzer or a fish to ride in a contest , or if the judges / other politics would disallow him to ride it ?
…I’m just interested to know how much “freedom” he would be allowed by his sponsors to play with stuff like that if he were to win a world title earlier in the year than , say , hawaii ??
aye, just watched the final, bit of a let down after some of the heats, but that last wave of freds was excellent, gotta say the man of the contest won it though. he’s ripped all week!
big bottom turn …AIR ! …at TEAHUPOO [it was not a small air , either !]
And you still come second ? ! … [to bobby martinez]
by .2 ! of a point …
MAN , the level of surfing ,
and the waves on the pro tour nowadays …over the top , compared to 10-20 years ago !
ben
as you say though Nick , it was a pity there was such a long lull during the final . But that’s the elements that make surfing what it is , I guess ! [imagine if it HAD been fourty minutes of non - stop barrels …there would have been a LOT of empty waves going through at ‘chopes’ , with only two of them in the water ?!]
And , it was good to see two different faces in the final to the usual suspects too, I reckon !
in the ladies division … CONGRATULATIONS to West Australian winning at teahupoo , making it three in a row WCT wins …
all the more impressive considering she is one of the older ladies on the tour , and how much Sofia Mulanovich and Chelsea Georgeson have both been CHARGING lately …no mean feat at a break like Teahupoo , obviously .
The footage I saw of Melanie showed her smacking the lip hard on her backhand as though it was a 2’ back at yallingup or something .
Go Melanie !
yeehaaa

if Taj can’t win a world title soon , then maybe Melanie can bring one home for us wozzies !
