template & dimensions for prone hull boards (ala proneman)

Guys like Proneman and Richard Safady ride hulls prone. The boards I have seen are typically over 7’ ++. I was interested to hear the shortest these boards can be ridden as a stand-up/prone combo. I was interested in any template sources I could show a local shaper.

Thanks

Bob

i had/have a 7'8" board that paul gross made for me several years ago. it is more or less a stretched out velo template, a little thicker than i normally ride, and some rolled v in front of fin. it worked extremely well either standing or prone/knee riding.... i would think mid-7' would be the low end of the combo craft...(though i have prone/knee ridden some of my 7 footers, it just seems that little extra length hepls out.)

Hey Bob,

I would check in with PG…he and or Spence could work up a template with the computer…e-mail it to an APS machine on the Goldy…and have your guy finish it off…

For me, my input is minimal on all my rides…I suspect it is the same with Saf

Matt,

Thanks- how thick was the 7’8".

Roger,

I saw your recent quiver photo under the gun thread, but didn’t want to hijack that thread. What is the shortest that you ride? E-mailing Paul would be a good idea. I hadn’t thought of it. At this stage it is more an idea - getting back into paddling and standup but having the fexibiity to ride prone has a lot of appeal.

The gunnier outlines are mostly for bigga waves and old school(stand up) surfing…In my quiver…the shortest board I have road prone is an 8-0 Liddle…I have put a lot of time in on my 8-4 Simmons outline…that length competes with the long boards on the points. I like to stay busy in the water, so I would give up any benefits of shorter designs, for the ability to catch fine little tinys…that the crew is not even seeing!! So anyway…the longest is 10-4 with many along the way down to the 8-0 Liddle…

above the 10-4…taken up 3 parking spots at Ala Moana

above the 8-4 set up as a twin

Hey Bob…are they getting any surf up in Noosa? Festival time they tell me.

Aloha,

Roger

Roger,

I heard from Bob Smith the Rip Curl historian a few days ago saying he was having fun waves at noosa. The next few days will depend on what the cyclone does. The Sundays final could ahve epic waves or storm waves.  Last week I had a surf with Jamie out at Snapper/greenmount/Kirra. Hadn’t surfed there for years but away from the main snapper takeoff there were waves to be had.

Thanks for the board info.

Bob

Roger,

Paul has been very helpful - a good suggestion. The cyclone is way up north but Noosa has been getting waves. Too crowded to bother with.

Bob

bob, i have 3 hulls i ride prone. 4’5x20x1.75 twin, 4’4x21x1.5 twin, velo template and a 4’11x22.5x2 single fin, modified velo template (narrower nose to keep water from flying in my face). i dont stand up on any of them but, i’ve had a couple of friends that do. the guys are smaller 5’6 -5’10 145-165 lbs or so. they dont work that great but they do it. i am having one shaped right now thats 5’9x22x1.5, i know someone around 165-180 will be able to stand up on it, easily in juice.

Thanks -

Fun looking boards. Where do you surf them? I tried to read the logo of who made the board at the bottom but magnification didn’t help.

I’m interested to know a bit more, either here or pm.

Bob

This is 5’4" and works pretty good. needs a bit of punch to get it going.

the bottom one is shaped by BJ at Fineline. its a combo of velo and his GeeBee. they all work insane. each has its own magic feeling. Oh, I surf them in all types of waves, beach/reef breaks mainly.
