"In a special memorial shaping tribute this July, The Boardroom at the US Open of Surfing will honor Martin during the Icons of Foam Tribute to the Masters Shape-off presented by US Blanks. Five shapers will receive the honor of replicating a classic Terry Martin surfboard."
Should be interesting to see what 5 masters are selected for the shape-off. First ones that comes to my mind are Bill Thrailkill and Jim Phillips...
$5250 doesn’t even register as sofa cushion change in an industry currently doing over 4 Billion dollars a year in global sales
the setting won’t matter. Get 5 master shapers mowing foam for a Terry Martin tribute board, and that should be pretty bitchin…sound of those Skills at work should easily block out the background hum of the Hype Machine carnival barkers selling the latest in 12 way ultra stretch pro ho board shorts and made on Euranus 7 fin hemp/cork/bamboo/recycled tire composites
…the good thing about these shape contests is that keep the handshaping alive in the retina and mind of the new generations.
-well, at least I hope that still those boards are hand shaped and not cnc shapes finished by some one like with those finished by Machado and others on previous sacred craft events.
It isn’t what the finished product was when Terry was done, it was about HIS process and technique. The screening, hand plane strokes, checking side-to-side eveness, etc, all these things Terry did only lasted a few minutes each, and then were gone forever until he did another with you. What’s now preserved inside the glass and resin allows us to remember those fleeting moments. The finished shape just needs to conform to the order sheet for a production shaper, how it gets there is what’s unique and special of the individual. What percentage of those attending the US Open would understand that?
.001% at most. Unlike Pete; I never got to see the Man do it. Should have when I had the chance. My loss. If you watch his you tube video you can see how straight forward his method was and how he had done it so many times that he almost didn’t have to take measurements. Do something long enough and not only are you a “Master” but you are also able to do it in your sleep. Wonder how many times he woke up from a dream that he was in the shaping room. Lowel
When I shaped at Hobie, next to Terry, he was in his prime. No wasted motion. Cutting outlines with a wormdrive Skil saw, precise planer work, and power disc sanding. A sight to behold! Same for Ralph Parker. Production shapers to the max, both of them.
