test post/ yater gun

Hey gang at first I am gonna try attaching a picture or two. If all goes well I will follow up with some text. Darren

darren-try again…curious to see what ya got (yater gun)

It is a craigslist find that needed a little work. However, the bright side is that for 30 bucks I could finally get a chance to ride a yater and see what all you guys are talking about. It has double stringer. An assymetrical wishbone blue resin panel? It’s about 8 feet long . Stringer says " y 25 78" . The lam is silver. And the tail is a ridicously pulled in thumb tail. I had a feeling this post would get your and or Kirk’s attention. The moral of the story is that I dont have a clue as to what type of fin to put in her. The goal is to re-christen her at big ol’ Sand Dollar Beach. I got digital pictures of her I am just in the process of trying to m ake them smaller. Darren

i blew the picture that outline is of a bad knee board not the mini gun I am fixing. still working

never give up

and again, sorry guys. I guess even young folks are bad with computers…

Well, Darren, it’s a very fine Yater knee-board you got there. Those brown tiles on your wall are nice, too…

here is the lam that is subsequently delammed.

now i am making some progress…

I am about ready top throw this lap top out the window. So instead I am going to step outside and fix up the last open tail ding on the board. I need some ding repair therapy. thanks for bearing with me. Darren

Pretty much the same thing that I was riding in the mid 70’s. Bought it at the old Yater shop. Pissed of our local shaper when I brought it home to Pismo. It was a little fuller and more round in the tail. Worked great at Saint Anns and the point breaks in SB. Not as good in the beack breaks. Mine was a 7’2". I used a Yater designed fin. True ames sells them still(I think). I don’t remember the length on the fin, but I know it was not over eight inches.

Hi Darren -

I have a similar Yater at 7’2" with an 8 1/2" unglossed fiberglass fin that looks original. The base on the fin is 6" but the tip is tapered although not as much as a Liddle or Frye type of fin. Not a lot of rake… the tip is about 2" aft of the trailing edge at the base. I’ll see if I have room in the car to bring to Big Sur.

Kirk Putnam might know the secret code to that signature thing. He once told me the “Y” indicates that Yater himself shaped it.

If it will help, I can trace the fin and mail the outline to you.

thanks for the info mcding and john. I am hoping that Kirk will pick up on this thread and immediately have a trove of knowledge about this board. However, just so everyone knows I am not hoping to sell this old board but rather ride it and learn from it. Thanks . Time for a glass off sesh. Darren

Hey, that’s a sister to mine # Y 25 18. I had someone once tell me mine was a shapedown because of the stringer but I’ve seen a few more withthe label and # sequence. Mine’s been identified as a “Pocket Rocket”. Any hoo I found it worked real well with a 9" True Ames L-Flex that was glossed (it has less flex than a sanded one).

Hi Daren – I’m pretty sure that the numbers are meaningless at this point and they are not recorded anywhere, it was more of a reference to keep track as they went along years ago. Mr. Yater says that he can sometimes tell the shaper by how they penciled their mark, but that’s about it. KP will know more on this for sure.

I’d be interested in a rocker profile shot and a look at that fin. Regardless, they are a good find, fun, and probably surf good. Yater was smart in using the parallel stringers to reinforce the fin area, and was famous for use of the wedge. Knowing you from our trip up the coast, and the crew you hang with, I know you will get a thrill out of how well the Yater’s work.

Aloha~

Thanks a bunch gang. The fin that the board came with was a wide base plastic piece of trash. It was one of those old plastic fins that you could scrape away with your thumb nail. I figured there was no way it could be the original fin so I left it behind. Here is a picture of the rocker…

Most all of the dings are now hand sanded to at least 80 grit and it it thus time for some base coat. If anybody has any possible canidate fins for me to try at Big Sur I would surely be game. Heck I will even bring some extra money so that if I find the golden fin I can take it home. Thanks again. Darren

it’s quite possible/probable that kp may have had a hand in building that board…
