Well, im stoked, huie has sent me a spin template for an egg. Its made of ( i think ) fibreglass, and in itself is a beautifull creation. I have taken pics and will put them up as soon as i can!!.
I have already marked it out on the floor out the back! ( sfter cleaning the concrete 3 times hehe ), looks sweet. Selling some stuff on evilbay soon, so fingers crossed i can get enough for blank, glass, resin and boxes all at once. Though im not in a hurry, don't wanna rush this one.
I started a keel fish, but after a planer mishap, i had to redo this one. I whipped out the spin template, and came up with a 5'8'' x 17n x almost 21 x 17t x 3''. Its a kneeboard blank, so im keeping as much foam in there as i can, as this is the shortest i've ever attempted ( i did have a 5'7'' skipp 80's shortboard, but it didnt paddle my 80kg too well!! ).
Thinking of a balsa tailblock to make the tail look better.
P.S i must thank huie again, as he called me up a few weeks ago and gave me some tips about shaping eggs. Very nice bloke on the phone.
Really nice of him to send you that. He spent some time making it. Excellent craftsmanship, and I bet a really good story or two he could tell, if he was encouraged.
Haven't touched it in a while, but i templated it out, and rough cut. Started trueing up the rails. Definately have upturned rails in the nose , maybe even some belly depending on how good i go with the planer. Soft edges all the way. Might progress from belly in the nose through to a soft down rail in the tail. We'll see. Resin tint and 6x66 are a guarantee!!
P.S you can see where i thought of adding a concave under the nose. Dont think i will now.
P.P.S that's my new shaping shed. We've sold our house, so all our shit, i mean stuff is in the shed. I can still brew in there ( Just brewed a Timothy Taylor's Landlord inspired ale, oh yeah! ), but i can't shape in there as there is not enough room, and the dust gets on everything. Doubt i'll have a 5 x 4 metre shed in the next place, so want to get this at least ready to glass in the next 8-12 weeks.
For sure, the template itself is a beautiful thing. And yes, im sure there have been many fine boards come from it. much finer than my effort. One day, after ive made many more, hopefully i can do it justice!
A long time ago, one of my friends did most of his templates in glass. He'd color-code them with tints for ease of ID. Thinner and light than masonite (and waterproof). huie being huie, I'm not surprised at all that he chose this method.
Back when I used to travel for shaping stints, carrying around stacks of masonite got old real fast. Nowadays guys carry a thumbdrive, LOL. I found that sheet plastic worked great, and I could roll them up or bend them around the perimeter inside my toolcase for travel.
Aesthetically, the fiber templates kick the plastic's ass, though.
A very similar example cut from 1 mil recycled polyethylene, about 50 grams and rolls into a 3''-4'' cylinder. The resemblance of the curves brings this back to topic, haha.
