The 4 day GOLF bag board atempt

Alright guys looking for help, I’ve shaped a few boards now and I just scored a last minute kite trip to the bvi’s through pure happen stance in trade for kiteboarding lessons. I’m a life long surfer turned kiter and have been messing with board building for about 5 years now self taught through sways university. Problem is I’ve broken everything in my quiver and surf boards wont fit in a golf bag anyway so it’d be 100-150 each way. I make my money teaching kiting and its been a slow year so I cant afford that and riding strapped boards dosnt get the surfing fix I need.

golfers get it easy

I’m leaving Friday and am going to attempt to bang one out but I’ve never tryed to get one done this fast. Success or fail I’ll at least know I tried. I’m borrowing a kite specific “golf” bag that will allow me to shape a 4’10 20". I’m going to cut down a 2" thick 2lbs 5’8 eps slice vaccum in the rocker and throw in twin proboxes.

I’ve got a placbo surf skate I literally put my foot threw for inspriation. Going to keep the tail wide min rocker back the and only 2.75 up front with a chopped nose. Theres a production board available like this minus the chop. Looking for outline and rocker advice. Kiterider you around?

Any insight or help would not be wasted!

PICS, please!

A few kiteboard companys make gear bags with no marking beside very obvious lettering saying golf. Get the biggest one and work from there. I wrap the board with the my kite to pad them works well.

This board just got glassed one day left to sand, vent and fin plug it. I’m stoked on the shape its got everything I’d want in a kite surfboard looks like it will rip just hope the bamboo deck will hold up under the kite. I’ve broken damn near everthing airing it out.

Final dims 4’11x20"x 2" nose r 2.5" tail .5" flat with a slight vee in the tail

Hoping it has enough float to paddle as well would of liked to go 2.5" but I only had 2" blanks I’m only 145lbs so It might work.

The tails fat and the board resembles a “super mini” simmions.

Tail is 13" and a foot up its 17 3/4"

Need help with probox placement. This will be mainly kited but I’ll try and surf it. Still I think the placment should be a bit forward than norm but what do I know.  Open to suggestions

I have two advices I would give you: first, re schedule your flight to arrive on Tuesday so you can score some good Cane Garden Bay. Second, try to borrow a board, I believe there is a shaper in Tortola who shapes Cane (with a C) Garden surfboards. Most people in the island are really cool. If all else fails, bring a surf mat or a bodyboard and a pair of flippers, it’s all about those loooong deep barrels. Many secret waves in Tortola, make some friends and keep a smile on your face mon! My avatar is me longboarding at Cane Garden.

Go for it!  I have been obsessed with the small travel board concept to avoid board fees.  I also have always wanted something I could keep in my car at work for those quick getaway sessions.

I would defintely not worry about the nose point–carry the width forward, blunt-nose style.  How big are you?  For me, paddling something like that would be tough without adequate float and flat rocker.

Please give it a go, and post what you make!  I need some inspiration.  That would be a fun project.  Good luck.

if it’s good enough for Curren…

Just to keep this going…

So what are the largest dimensions for a board that could still fly for free?  I don’t know the rules–don’t fly much.  Do golf bags fly for free?  It would be interesting to take the maximum allowed dimension and optimize it for performance.

Any progress, hunter?  Any info on that Curren board?  Is that a Tomo design?

Bicycle boxes are bigger and they often fly free.

Pics on my phone not sure how to get them up here, host them on photobucket I guess no time for that now. I’m still on the fence about fin placment.

Thinking 6-7" up .75-1" off the rail 1/8-1/4" toe in.  Any ideas?

Sounds like reasonable placement to me.  I would favor the 1/8" toe-in.

Aside from that, I have no valuable input.  Obviously, I really just like this project and want to keep it fresh.  Post pics when you can.  This will likely be my next project, so I am looking for any inspiration you can give.

3 hours till I leave and its ridable just needs a bottom sand.  I rushed it and it shows a bit but guess what it fits and I’m sure she’ll rip!

Any updates?  Ride reports?  Troubles with “smuggling” the goods?  PICS?
