The Blue Jimmy (pic)

Finally! It’s done! My second board has been christened the ‘Blue Jimmy’.

5’11" x 22" x 3" – 9" x 5.5" Lis template keels @ the crack - slight toe in, 4 degree cant

The nose ended up a bit thick but since I’m a little heavier it gives me some added volume and float. Took it out this morning at Tourmaline and realized that I really am a crappy surfer! But then again I think it’s gonna take a bit of getting used to.

Thanks to all for the help along the way.

nice job. Was it hard to do two different colored resins? Can anyone give a how to when doing those?

Have fun on the new stick.

Do you mean the swirl on the bottom or the different deck and bottom colors?

The blue swirl was actually SUPER easy. I knew I wanted a mostly blue base with some white in it so I mixed more blue than white (separately). I then dumped the white into the blue and stirred it twice. Then I just dumped it onto the board in long lengthwise runs (cause that’s what I wanted it to look like in the end). Once that started getting into the cloth I went about spreading/squeeging the resin as I normally do (which is to say, as I did on my first and only other board!). Granted watching Cleanlines in the Master Glasser videos as well as a bunch of the videos posted by other people on this site demystified the process quite a bit.

I learned the hard way that the tape on the deck is hard to see through the dark blue so my lap line cut was a little off.

To do the deck I actually did a foam tint - mixed the resin to the color I wanted then used a squeege to spread it onto the foam directly. Of course I taped off the inlay to make sure I wouldn’t get it onto the rails. PlusOneShaper made an excellent suggestion to tape an overflow area where I could squeege all the extra resin into/onto to flow it off the deck. Actually PlusOneShaper made the foam tint suggestion so thanks for that as well.

I then glassed over the deck with two layers of 6oz and clear lam resin as normal.

The board is heavish for its size but for a fish I don’t mind it so much since it helps give it momentum and inertia in the water. But I’m sure there are differing points of view.

Anyway I’m far from an authority on this but those are the steps I followed.

Have fun,

Santiago

Nice One, How did it paddle? Did catch waves pretty easy? I’m going to start 002 soon looking to a 5’11" too, but I think my nose will be a little more rounded like the Jim Kinstle design in the book Surfboard design and construction.

Sweet board it looks pretty flat which means that it will haul A$$

Nice keels and resins tints also

It paddled really well since it’s got tons of volume. The waves were shut down by the high tide (I think) so I wasted a lot of energy paddling for fizzlers. When I did finally find a good spot it was catching them well.

Chano - thanks. I’m looking forward to having more time in the water tomorrow and give it a better test. The few waves I did catch I definitely felt the speed. It’s gonna take some getting used to… I felt myself stomping on the back foot to turn instead of leaning the rails into the turn.

Damm good jimmy !! for 2 boards… My first glass job was a mess. here’s a picture.

Mr. Jimmychuck, let me congratulate you on a job well done! SECOND board: cutlap, swirl, foam tint, multi-resin pinlines, self-shaped fins, polish(?), power steering, power brakes  … …no one helped you (directly), correct? You either figured it out or read stuff; that’s insane! Those boards are a blast tambien. Two things come to mind, what’s next for the 'Chuckster (gonna be hard to top) and, do I see future career move??? Stay stoked.

Hi Santiago,

I REALLY like the look of that !!

How wide are the nose and tail…I’m guessing around 17" ?

And tip to tip on the tail…is that around 11" ?

How deep was the ‘butt crack’ ?

…thanks mate !!!

p.s. - I want to do a similar blue colour tint , or maybe pigment, on my ‘mal’, since I didn’t end up tinting the ‘bonzer’…

Really nice, i love blue&white swirls…

Cheers flavio

Thanks guys! I’m super stoked with the way it came out.

PlusOne - I got tons of help from you and others on the site answering my questions and reading through the archives. Watched Master Glasser a couple of times to get the 411 on the tint/glass/gloss. No onsite help. Did take a look at a bunch of fish at Surfride to get some ideas about fin placement/cant/toe. I think next time I’ll go a little finer grit on the final sand prior to polishing.

Chipfish - 5’11" n: 17.5" wp: 22" (@+2") t: 16.75" tips: 11" bc: 7" Don’t know the exact rocker measurements but it’s around 2.5" front, 1.5" back (I think).

Next one for me will be a 6’8" single fin. My brother in law is gonna be doing a longboard (his first board) so I’ll be helping with that as well. Then we’ll see… I figure a couple of “materials + beer” boards for some friends to get better and more consistent. Believe me if I could pay the bills doing this I’d leave the cubicle farm in a second!

Now I just have to get better at surfing! Which reminds me… out I go!

Santiago

Bro’ your stoke gets me stoked! I made boards out of my neighbors’ and later my own garage for a number of years. Tons of friends got boards. All the while I worked in the ‘cubical farm’ thinking that was the ‘right’ thing. Then a wierd series of events happened and now I’ve been enjoying a good living off making boards! It’s like a dream, I’d do it for nothing, but the money frees me up to do other stuff, pushing to the next level. The best part has been meeting so many great people, in other professions, think about the people they are forced to work with… …like a cop who mostly meets the negative side of society. People getting surfboards are sooooo stoked, and they respect your talent. They work hard elsewhere possibly in some miserable situation so they can come to you, so they can get their magic surfboard to pursue one of their most favorite things ever! Believe me, the stoke can grow from where you are now!!!

I like your outlook Greg! I’ve got some ideas going through my mind… we’ll see what the year has in store.
