My friend and fellow shaper Axel Lorentz recently produced this “out of the box” proto of a finless surfboard. He and Paul (his glasser) had some fun glassing it… I thought you would enjoy the photos:
Maybe Axel will drop by and explain the concept behind this beautiful piece of sculpture…
Really happy that you like "the enterprise", and thanks a lot for your compliments...
That was really fun and exiting to shape. It's my second attempt of finless surfboard and most of the ideas occurs during the shape. and how goes the first one really helped me for that one. I kept this idea of an extreme wing cause first one had good results and was pretty close of what i was expecting...So i pushed all the lines to the extreme...
Still not finished the board, glass is done but need now to sand it. For sure it will be done for next week end. Hope we'll got some good waves...
There is a lot of sense in that design.......transition from flat starts with roll from higher centre section then to rear outside concaves....& then engage the middle concave when further up on rail....each section having it's own purpose without being too long so that it can turn tighter.
Wonder if the centre section has enough float in it to allow it to tip to the side.
Welcome to sways, Axel. That's a beautiful piece of work! I'll bet glassers and sanders everywhere are cringing, though.
When wakeboards went ''finless'', I was involved in some design projects in that industry. We did a lot of similar stuff in the prototyping, but not that extended tail... I did some surfboards inspired by the wakeboards. I think Wes Laine still has one of them.
OK, I’m taking the liberty to post the latest photos that Axel posted on Facebook and I will tell him about your interest for his work. I hope he comes back to tell us more, but seeing how the weather is right now, I doubt that anyone has ridden it yet…
Well, i’m afraid that Axel might be a bit busy… It’s been raining a lot here since yesterday. For those who know the basque country, you know what raining can mean here, don’t you? Well, actually, it means this: (these are photos of Axel’s workshop which he shares with Michel Borel (PSM Surfboards), taken today:
This is the shop’s entrance…
This is the glassing-room…
Boards floating everywhere…
Axel and Paul (his glasser).
Paul, SUPing it out in the fields to look for lost boards…
Havoc outside…
That’s why Axel might be a bit busy right now. Will go and see if I can help tomorrow… I’m glad that MY shop is situated on a very sloppy piece of land. Water just flows down but doesn’t “pile up” and stagnate. Axel’s shop is very near l’Uhabia (local river) and on flat land… More news later…
