coming soon........

Some people have asked what a " Flying V " is....

When I told my cousin about it he said ,

"Have you invented a Flying Vagina?,  I'd be interested in that because my wifes set up a permanent No Fly Zone at our house....."

beer is coming out of my nose as I laugh at this one.  too funny.

The V.....

Your comments please gents......

I don’t know what to say.  Really. I’m not catching very quickly here.  What is the mesh for?  I think you are just teasing us.

Hi Greg, with the hard deck inflatable surfcraft I was making   http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/new-surfcraft-species-take-2

it was complex to work out the inflation pressures and the stretch of the fabric etc. so I thought what else could be used for the deck?

We all use a hard fibreglass deck,

some use inflated fabric for the deck

but what other material could be used?

And then I thought of the trampoline mesh on a catameran.

It might not be perfectly stable for standup

But its well suited for prone use....

Stretch it out between the arms of the V

I could use that as a deck,

something else for the hull

and in between its hollow.

The mesh is 'burst rated' so it should be safe and durable.

Im not really teasing, just sharing the theory and fishing for your ideas and comments before I show the board.

I'll be following this one ........

Hi Brett -

As always, I'm following this one to see where it goes.  I can imagine the mesh tension pulling the sides of the 'vee' together?  Something tells me you have a plan to hold it all in shape but at a glance, that's the first concern that came to mind.

I also wondered if you couldn't just stick the gal in the bikini to the deck and use her for.... padding?

I always think of Johnny Winters and Albert King when I think of flying V’s.  The Jimmy museum in Seattle is fricken great!  Mike

Thanks for the comments guys, weve all got a few wild designs to let loose.

I built the solid deck inflatables with each shape as a progression on the last,
but this V design is a complete vision. I kinda knew what it looked like before I started.

EPS.

Vertical tail ends.

Rounded nose rail.

Its curvilinear in the front blending into angles in the tail...... a mix of sharp lines and curves to fit the purpose.

(JohnMellor, Ive put in a sly tail bridge for stability.)

SF,

Are you still working on the inflatables ?

Bob

Hey Bob, this is a progression on the inflatables.

at the start of that thread I said I was looking for minimal design so the inflatable hull was a means to that end, but not the end.

This Flying V is a bit like the first inflatable I did with the solid perimeter rails and fabric skins on the dek and hull,

but without the internal pressure or valves and seals etc... Im getting a similar effect with less tech.

But Im not ruling out a return to the inflatables.

Did you think the inflatables shouldve gone further ?

Brett,

For me, simpler is best. The less that can go wrong (e.g leaks), get lost etc the better.

Regards

Bob

Just to bore everyone, the idea is to see if a simple shape can be new.

Sure I couldve used a simple flat piece of ply and called it new, but wheres the fun in copying the classics ? ?

And I couldve also used a different resin/foam/fabric/ spray, then put it on a conventional shape, and called it "new", but thats not really New.

Previously I mixed predictable elements from different craft and put an inflatable skin on a simple hard deck.... Interesting to do but not new, and it was predictable that those craft would float and plane so they werent really a bold journey.

but this time Im looking at non traditional surfcraft materials. .

Thats why Im going with the black plastic mesh trampoline deck from catamarans,

and a clear vinyl skin for the hull.

Anyone tried different materials ? ?

foils,

you could use many things in the center.

i think polycarb would look cool + you could mold different shapes.

anywho..............good on you.

Been riding this on and off for 2 months,

 Clear flexible vinyl hull.

Surfoils,

You won't be sneaking under the radar with this one. What sort of waves have you ridden it in /does it go best in?

Bob

I’ll take the girl on the deck, but only if we can be prone together to test my “burst rating”…lol

Dont bother with the Bumble Bee one, its the next one thats interesting....

The bumble bee looked too thick, this later model is way sleeker. How does it ride?
