THE GRANGE- new fin design with Futures Base.

the science of this would give me some kind of blood clot. however the magic of it, well I totally understand that. I have been mulling over something similar since foamhead introduced me to the twinzer. I suppose I have to actually do some making now. “harumph”

Great thread, please keep up posting pics and updates.

Have your surfed this C-Drive fin posted in the beginning? I normally surf with a small trailer fin to prevent to slide in turns and to get more drive, but for doing tricks I prefer the twin version. Does this design give you more drive and comparable drive like a twin fin? (Twin with normal thruster sidefins)

hi Brett !

here are  some more questions , I hope you don't mind , mate ?

1]  Are you mainly trialling it with a back fin , at the moment ? [ie:  "thruster" [kinda ] style (with extra finlets on each side fin , obviously ) ] .

2] IS it also an aim to try it quadded  ?!   or would that just be TOO MANY fins / too much work ? [ that would be 'nearly' eight fins , eh ?]

3] by the way ...what is the WEIGHT  like on them , as they are , with four of them in two boxes ?

....did you notice extra tail weight , surfing them ?

4]  [and as you mentioned ] will you one day try BIG twinnies front / small trailer finlets back ?

If so , do you go with something along the lines of the small fin being around half the size of the big fin [in DEPTH of fin , at least ?]

.... there are so many options , but each unit is so time and materials-consuming , isn't it ....

So , if maybe someone like Sjoerd ['Soul'n'Power' here ] could help mould them , quicker and accurately , then maybe some of the many different configurations could be tried out quicker , hopefully !

Well, Brett , keep up the great work , matey !

I think this COULD  be the best /  most adventurous fin thread ever , as other people get creative , and contribute to the process !

I would DEFINATELY like to test a PROBOXED version , in my "orange stub" ,  one day , but I'll leave the hard work  [ and the credit for it all ] entirely up to you , Brett !

[ I notice no-one has asked yet , how the NAME "grange" came about...]

also , Brett , were you on sways in the days when George posted this ?   [...it might be of interest , I hope ? ]

Thanks for the comments guys, theres some great ideas you all mention, like Wood_Ogre, Ben Chipper and Toasters compliment about the 'magic' of the fin design.

Parick, Yes Ive been riding C-Drive fins for a few years because they suit my style and theyre a bit of extra fun. Ive got FCS and SpeedFin versions.

I find The Grange fins to be more 'side focussed' like original twin-fins but with more projection, quick to snap but with more drive than a Thruster side fin because of the extra area over a standard side fin.

Theres a lot of ways I could go with The Grange Fin design but for now Im offering The Grange up for comment and learned Swaylockian discussion so I can gain from your ideas..

But why is it so quiet on this thread with 1100 views....?  Havent more people got technical questions ?? Even a personal attack or two would be welcomed.

Its also about time someone dropped in and showed that something similar was done 30 or 50 years ago otherwise Im claiming it as a never seen before / original fin design!

" Havent more people got technical questions ?? ...."

well, I dunno about them neccessarily being 'technical' [you  know me!]

  but ...

how does the setup actually FEEL ?!

....on the takeoff , in hollow waves ?

.... backhand , pigdogging ?  ...did you notice , for example , any extra hold / release / 'squirrellyness' [yep , tech , eh?]

....off the lip , forehand  and backhand ?

..... off the bottom ,  forehand and backhand ?

...... what type / size of waves have you ridden "the grange"  in , so far ?

.....what BACK fin [size / shape / rake ] have you tried / would you recommend with them ?

more questions to come , if you like , but THOSE two posts 'should' keep you busy answering for a while , yes ?

Me, I find it helpful to keep a notebook , and write down my waves / impressions / setups , STRAIGHT after EACH surf , while it's all still FRESH in my memory , and to take photos ...do you have someone to photograph [or , preferably, VIDEO you ? ] riding the board ?

 ....okay , I  hope this helps ?

  cheers Brett !

Now youre just making trouble for me Ben !!

Call you tonight.

I like the looks of that fin (the bottom pic where it’s in your hand, the post at 5:01am) a lot!  However my immediate reaction is to want to curve the rear fin slightly to close the gap between the two fins so that they reattach at the top.

Maybe that would ruin it, I don’t know - it’s a gut reaction.

(Then I’d remove the fillets if possible?)

Looks like a lot of work went into it alreay.  Thanks for sharing!!

Surffoils, reading with great interest.  thx

Looks great Brett - Like I said, I’d love to try 'em some day…  Waiting for a twin/“quad” ride report.

Then there are the possibilities for different templates for each of the two fins…  Ha!

I’d like less rake on the main fin, giving up area, and a little more area on the “side” fin…

Taylor

Hi Keith,Greg and Taylor, thanks for your comments.

I didnt know if the Sways Intelligentsia were ignoring me or if The Grange wasnt interesting enough for comment.....

Theres not a lot I can add at the moment because the design is fresh out of the shed and its still being tested every day I can.

howdy brett, what does keith’s suggestion remind you of? " )

cheers,

not sure... a hoop or a tunnel fin I think. Like a Turbo Tunnel ?  Is that what you are thinking of ??

you forgot my reply to your pm already hehe not a ‘senior moment’ i hope?  " )

cheers,

Ah Yes !! The idea of joining the tips seems to be obvious !

I might get motivated, give it a go and see what happens.

…as well as shaping that ‘negative fin’ right between the two solid ones, harking back to your finless board thread hehe " )

cheers,

I was thinking about “the grange,” and I realized something…  Kind of a flip flop, but what about more cant in the front fin, and less/none in the rear…  kinda likea quad set up, but in one box…

Now - if you could make the two fins adjustable like that… set the cant prior to putting the fin in the box.  Ha!

They look like they would be fun to try,How much to send a pair to Cal?

Id love to say Ive got a range of the fins ready to sell but they take days to make and Ive got plenty of other stuff to build at the moment....... 1.3 million people die from reusing contaminated syringes, so does anyone have any ideas about constructing a safe re-useable syringe system ?

J bird, youre welcome to make a set, most of the construction details are here already.
