I just retrieved this Conneticuit Valley Arms 45 cal mountain rifle

I built this ftom a kit in the late 70's

its been stored for 30 plus years

Ken, nice “Hawken”. What’s more, you provided me with an excuse to post my latest black powder replica:

(Colt Navy 1851 model, silver-plated, by Pietta Firearms.)

Kensurf, is that a hickory stock or ash?  Or what??

tblank

its maple

balsa

not a hawken,, "mountain rifle" its a discontinued model, but known for accuracy,, 32" barrel

is your navy model 36 cal?,,,, I had one long ago but it got pilfredged by my ex wife,, to this day she wont owe up to taking it

Ken, over here “Mountain rifles” and “Hawken rifles” are pretty much synonymous. What’s the difference? From what I read, the Hawken brothers themselves called their guns “Rocky Mountains rifles”.

Unfortunately, Pietta firearms have been known to take some liberties with history in their replicas production and this so-called Navy 1851 is actually a .44… The same goes for this one:

…sold as a “Police 1862”. The “real” Police 1862 Model was built on the Baby Dragoon .31 frame, unlike this one, and was a .36 caliber (this one is a .44). OK, not historically correct, but I like them both.

Thanks Ken. You got an even finish on it.

balsa

the Hawken was 50 and 54 cal with brass fixtures and 28" barrel, with a single barrel wedge

from what I know the CVA mountain rifle may have been a design of their own,,???

they had 45 and 50 cal.  barrels are interchangable

mountain rifle has two barrel wedges and silver patch box, all other fixtures are steel

heres a Hawken and a pic of my Mountain Rifle side by side

edit,, just looked into Hawkens and the old ones have much longer barrels34, 35" rather  than the 28" ones on the newer ones
