OK. I’m sure many of you have had the chance to see where this is going with a whole “design forum” of Surfer Magazine dedicated to Tom Morey’s Swizzle design. I think the whole thing is a little creepy. Is Morey’s goal a truly functional performance/cost model or a way to mass market a cheap indestructable wave sliding tool? (Think Boogie Board). Tom’s innovations have all been directed towards the mass market - and apparently the bigger the market the better. I really don’t like the idea of legions of people crowding the waves on boards that are super steep on the beginner learning curve (read easy to learn on for those of you who forgot your algebra). Here’s a photo of some of the Y swizzle prototypes (©2000 Starwaves; fair use intentioned by linking to photo). If these sticks are indeed performance models that can “hang onto the face of any wave and turn on a dime”…I need to hear it from and independent source. Who’s ridden one? What is it about a boogie board rail that makes them better than a down or 50/50 rail? Is softer better? And what about that rippely bottom - whats up with that? So we have two issues…Are these performance sticks or boards for the mass market? Swaylock
Dear Mike, You truely need to ride one of “Y”'s boards with the hot burners before you put an negitive outlook on something a man with a pure heart has come up with. I for one have ridden one I have here in Australia. It went fantasic at Noosa last year! Its total down the line, but I wouldn’t say its for beginners & I don’t put any beginners on it so far. I ride my 7’foot fishes by Dave Parmenter & Just love them! I also ride boards by Alan Byrne short & Matt Kino#####a. Longboards I favor Donald T. & Wayne Dean, But for high performance and fast speed long board Jeff Johnson who shapes for T/C Jam! And Yes! I can surf & Just got back from Surfing at the Noosa Comp. And the bottom line is you need to have fun surfin. Y does this & I’ll tell yas one thing the girls on the gold coast call this board Y made my Weapon, because it surfs unreal in slop. so thats it, Yes! a women that has years of experience & loves to Surf. P.S. I rode my Wayne Dean at the noosa this weekend & it went fantasic! Aloha nancy E.>>> OK. Y here. As to my motives in producing the Swizzle. Like the Penetrator, Camel, Blue Machine and Boogie, I just do it. Motives? Never quite clear except, I want a board that ‘feels’ right and design for that. I want a board that will last better than you-know-who’s foam and fiberglass. I want a board that won’t break any more of my ribs than have already been cracked when the hard edge get’s loose and wangs me. I want a board that will knee paddle and not wipe out my knees. I want no more pressure dings. So the Swizzle is such a board and I put it out because i 've found over the years that WHAT I REALLY AND TRULY LIKE, OTHERS ENJOY AS WELL. Best wishes, Mike, Y.>>> OK.
