Same story here. I got 2 pint jars of F&F on sale before realizing it was gray, now saving it for fixing nailholes in drywall. I bought some Red Devil One Time lightweight spackle to try on EPS. It applies and dries fine, I have yet to glass over it. -J
PS Wondering if this gray is a discontinued product, cannot find the matching SKU or product code 12144 on DAP’s website, where the current spackle is listed as white. My jar is dated 2013.
Why not just add white pigment to get it back to white-ish like we sometimes do with spackle? Or is it just too grey? I was thinking if it’s like the grey sways uses for their comment dialog, you might have a chance at getting it back to a useable color?
Ok crisis averted. Sherwin Williams store has some good stuff as Drew said. I just bought a 55 gallon drum full. I don’t know why their web site doesn’t work but they are still in biz
Thanks to stoneburner for that link. I somehow missed that thread. I just did a board with the epoxy/microballoon slurry for comparison and have to say that I’m going back to spackle. I think that if done properly it yields better results. Of course there are some here who know that already, and then there are some who will never be convinced. C’est la vie.
And yeah, Greg, you had me freaked out for a couple seconds there.
Some kinds of mineral (glass) microsphere are light grey. Have the surprise when i first buy real structurale microsphere used for aéronautic parts : double density and slight grey. I had artic white Pigment to the mix for white finish, works to with spackle: purify water with white pigments.
I finally accessed a SW products page online. They have two spackling options, **Shrink Free **and White Lightning. The links to either are very slow at the moment.
Looks like White Lightning could be better for surfboard building. With color cue drying indicator, I would want to buy a small container for a test panel first though.
White Lightning® Colorcue™ Lightweight Spackling Compound is an **extremely light and smooth formula** that fills in one coat without shrinking or cracking. Ideal for finishing and repairing imperfections.
Product Features
Lightweight spackling compound for quick, easy application/workability
Contains color-indicating dry time technology (applies pink/dries white; when color fades, it's time to sand and paint)
The new Fast N Final that is gray has the label with “With Primer- Ready to Paint” or something… The last of the good stuff had a green logo that said
“UV Safe” or “Low VOC” or something but definitely had a bright green logo on the front. I was dumb enough to not notice the new crap was gray until after
I spackled a 9’6" and saw the gray spots! Had to spray the whole board white after that.
Red Devil ultra-light spackle seems good??? Think I found it at a paint supply house…
I use Red devil brand. You can get it from Ace Hardware stores also. But ASM (Atlantic Surfing materials) sells it in 5 gallon buckets for like $50 if you have a wholesale account. That’s where we get it now. Also used the Sherman Williams brand before. Both work well.
Is it just me, or does spackle, which I believe is water based, generaly used with eps/epoxy, absorb water, if exposed, after it’s dry, e.g., you get a ding, and the spackle takes on water too?
I think so, so I went to making my own super “dry” epoxy and microsphere “spackle.”
