The new frontier?

the brittle parts of the the board will be put inside with the outside made of memory foam that is hand-molded for each surf, nose and tail rocker will be bent in as desired, the stringer and “bones” will be made of wierdly shaped tapered rods to control flex, harmful vibrations that are out of phase with skittering across the sea surface will eliminated by electro-mechanical threads that stiffen when vibrated, the fin will include horozontal parts for hydroplaning

Freaking Far out! How about entering it in the ‘Build a Board of Boards for Laird Hamilton’ competition? So far Roy is the only entrant, he is making and entering three 21 footers. The closing date is the 5th of April 2006. The contest is for paddle in boards only. The challenge is on! Is Swaylock’s up to it?

I think it’s the shape that’s due for a change .If we study the board in action we must wonder about the need to have such a sharp nose when it’s hardly ever justified functionally other than to create fear into other surfers. We only need a few of the topguns to change this ridiculous design and bring some sense into the industry which will itself of course benefit from the new trend.

Perhaps a new non agressive nose will go a step closer to educating the riders to ‘SHARE the SURF’

I happen to think the answer (at least one of them) is already here and designed by the guy who helped design the modern outline. I think it’s range of design is vast, functional and proven. It paddles well floats well and holds in well on steep waves. It will give a surfer exactly whatever he is capable of doing in the way of moves. It is nothing really new, but a new and refined take on an older design. As far as shapes go, I personally feel it’s at the top for all around surfing and can be modified for pros. However, the shaper is his own man and will not follow too many mainstream ways of promoting his design. Instead those that know, know.

you talking bonzer? Campbell Bros?

i think benny’s comments about working with good people apply here as well …

once a business grows to a certain level , the quality of the poeple around you determine your success or failure , regardless of the quality of the product being produced …

a few years back . i said i would rather do low numbers by myself with no stress than work with clowns …

unless i can work with the best people in there respective fields which i have less skill in , then i dont want to work with anyone , why put effort into something thats not the best it can be …

i know i have something good , so i havent been jumping at every offer or idea that comes along …

i still have a certain artistic integrity , as soon as i hear coments like " oh we will just use cheaper glass or cheaper resin to increase profit margins " then i know i couldnt work with that mentality …

why put all that effort into getting a customer and then sell him crap so he doesnt come back ??

rather deliver , quality , service , and give more than the customer was expecting …

right now some exciting things are happening , what i do well doesnt even compare to the skills and talents of the people im working with now …

why havent i sold my ideas ?? because most previous offers involved a misuse of the knowledge …

whats coming will see the local surf industry revitalised , and the asian importers standing there with there mouths open …

its one thing to have an idea and a product , but getting it to market and making a dollar without comprimising quality or service and most of all performance ,thats when others have to do what they do best …

i dono if it will ever get to the NASDAQ ? im really not fussed , as long as i can make a decent living and go surfing then thats enough for me …

I just have to say that Bert is the sh*t

dont worry no bible quote though haha

Who gives a fig about the surf industry? The new frontier (if there is such a thing) is more about wave riding than it is about all this business talk. Show us something new, not just the same rehashed shapes and “I’m doing well” self satisfied raves.

And by the way, you say that you are the new frontier but your trip is so similar to the whole commercial pro surfing thing that I really wonder what the difference is between you and the machine. Go ride a mat Bert!

who are you directing that to?

Is Laird looking for a roof or a surfboard?

What style of roofing shingles will you be placing on this span or if it really is a “board of boards” what size outboard will it hold?

Tell me more about the challenge. I would be up to it. I hope your not using Laird’s name in this propaganda with out his permission. I would bet he would be pissed to find out some wanker is using his good name to promote roofing trestles or a surfboard.

Your language also. Do you actually kiss roy with that mouth??

“oh crap, which is the nose and which is the tail?” My doggy says Roof, Roof!!!

I see you edited your foul language from a previous post dragon. Good call.

The tongue is the ultimate fin in life. It’s unfortunate though that once you turn it loose it is hard to take words back. Maybe get a turbo tunnel modification for your tongue?

My doggy needs to go out(roof, roof), please excuse me.

If someone builds aboard for God, then does he need permission?

If someone builds a board for Laird, then does he need permission?

No and No.

Regarding the rocker table, we are in fact using ‘Oregon building supplies’ in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, to produce computer designed circular arc trusses for two of the three 21 foot ‘Board of Board’ models. What you see is the exact rocker for the ‘Board of Boards’ 21 footer.

Excuse my French, please!

No and No.

Actually, according to the Bible, God did design and comission the first surfboard also known as Noah’s ark. Noah built that for 100 years. He was mocked by the world because until that time, man had not even seen rain. Simple movable rudder fin system. I think it was o’fish’l or a red-x set up. If someone builds a board for Laird, uses his name in the promotion of a half baked scheme to try to make it seem legitimate. Well, in simple legal terms does one need permission? YES If you would be kind enough to tell me more about this board of boards competition.(your site has only roofing pictures). Please get info regarding rules, deadlines, entry fees, etc. I would be more than happy to get this info to Mr. Hamilton and let him and his lawyers see what they think about your organization improperly using a persons name, status, fame, for self gain. I am having a “haircut of haircuts” competition for roy s of nz. See how I kept it just discrete enough not to get sued over my self promotion of my sturdy cutting edge, electric shears. Stick with my D. and I will show you the way. “Follow Me” I am the future of surfing.

lets keep it on track …dont wanna see a lock appear …

any new direction is a new frontier …

I agree! And CMP I think that Roy and Emma are on a fantastic idea here, Laird is regarded as the gnarliest surfer in the world by most so lets see different boards for the gnarliest waves. I don’t think that the board is just being built for Laird but rather for the future of surfing.

BTW: Laird once said if he could have only one board it would be a twelve footer.

And for my predictions I think Roy’s comments on fins and fin-setups were very true and Berts boards are definatly in the game. I think that materiels will change more than board shape also.

But have you thought that in the future the surfing community might be trying the most crazy stuff ever.

I think we will be trying everything and probably getting good results, Like Chipfish making a 3 fin bonzer that was written off by a member in the first thread he posted. as it turns out the board is great!

Hixy’s crazy but sexy ‘Moonrocket’ even makes me think of a little Michael Peterson in it.

Roy making 21ft surfboards that can surf the smallest of waves and the largest also. The board seems like it could ride a ripple for miles in open ocean yet it has the ability to paddle into a 100ft wave.

and even things like Deathfrog building skimboards with weird tails to perform in all types of shorebreaks.

I think were going to push and push till we find more and more and its possible that everyone can ride something completly crazily different and no-one will ask questions, people might be able to ride boards from 5ft2 to 21ft. Wood, Metal, foam, fibreglass, rubber anything! the possibilitys are endless…

F@#? I’m excited! this is great!

Happy Surfing,

Josh!

Great! Still waiting for my application regarding this project. I am sure Mr. Hamiliton will not agree with the use of his name. And it’s illegal!

It is unfortunate you all did not see what was edited from D’s post. After that remark, they would have been banned in my estimation. I would not have said squat if it were not for the comment which was slyly edited. One other member saw it for sure and D know’s what was said. “pardon my french” doesn’t take it back. I don’t do business with lots of people just based on the fact they are jerks. No big deal, but to think I can’t dish it back to the instigator supreme is crazy.

Still waiting for my application to enter my design for Laird’s competition. You all can enter yours too??? The deadline is coming soon and I want to enter. Don’t tell me the applicants are being screened and subject to an “lack of ethics” code!!

RUN ROY, RUN!

Hello cmp,

Thankyou for your kind offer regarding our ‘Board of Boards’ competition. The details of the competition are as follows:

  1. The competition is for paddle in boards

  2. The competition buzz is to build a board in answer to DK’s question on the surfermag forum . . .

""heres my simple question…no moving past it.

What is the fastest board for you?

If a 100 foot wave was found and you knew it was coming…laird calls your shoe phone and says “hello friend…make me something i can ride the 100 footer on…”

what do you make him roy?

so tell me…what is the fastest surfboard? what material… think of it like if you had to outrun a wave ona board what would it be?"

  1. The closing date for entries is the 5th of April 2006.

  2. Entry is open to all. There is no entry fee, and no formal prize.

  3. Judging will be entirely serendipitous.

Please allow us to accept your offer of making contact with Laird Hamilton and/or his lawyers regarding this event. We will be most interested in the result.

Thankyou in advance,

Emma Stewart (for Power surfboards)

PS Let’s see your design for the competition whenever you are ready!

Wow,

New frontier huh, but with all your limitations. Paddle in only??? very limiting.

The total waterman would never be so closed minded. He is only going shorter and shorter and higher and longer with pull in foil boards.

Can I suggest just a few more rules???

  1. You can’t kill more than 30 trees when designing/manufacturing your board.

  2. You have to physically carry the board .5km on semi rough terrain.(timed)

  3. It has to be a completed board/not just designed.

4 It has to be surfed in 40+ foot face with photographic proof.

  1. You have to take the use of Laird’s name off your self promoting endevours until permission is granted from Laird himself.

I am certainly in.

Uhh, hold on here. What’s this whole argument/dick-waving contest all about? To build a board for surfing in 100 foot surf… paddle in? Are you ladies out of your mind? I don’t understand the goal of the contest- and the judging criteria. Humor me. -Carl
