sorry for the typo in the heading, have a sliced pointer finger on left hand (yes from cutting a template out) and its making typing even harder...have gone from two finger typing to one!!!
Welcome to my shop…
(above) Your basic two car garage…
(above) The heart of my shop is the tablesaw and off feed
table…Got the saw a couple decades ago with no motor…Added a 1.5 HP
Baldor motor and a Beisermyer fence…Money well spent…There are
better saws out there but I know this one and that counts for a lot…
(above) Below the off feed table are doors holding my compressor and HVLP air turbine…Next door are the power sanding tool…
(above) Here are my portable saws and in the next space, routers…
(above) Epoxy and glue zone…
(above) Sandpaper supply…
(above) The adjustable shaping/glassing rack set low for shaping and sanding…
(above) Legs extended the rack is set high for glassing…
(above)The top separates from the bottom for storage…
(above) I spend enough time out here to have the place feel
comfortable…Photos of inspiring places and a tiny TV in the corner to
make the time fly by…
(above) Plenty of projects in various stages of completion…Oh, that wall heater is worth it’s weight in Carbon Fiber…
(above) With the door closed it’s always comfortable…Working on a fin today, something I glued up about five years ago…
(above) It basically comes down to using what you have and not making excuses for what you don’t have…
Here’s a shot of my shed out back.
I am currently working on my first board (5’10" fish, pics included as well). It’s been alot of fun just getting set up… making tools, stands etc. It makes the time when i’m out there actually generating foam dust all the more special. The plywood wall & shelf on the right is freestanding so i can move it when i need to get my lawnmower out & there is also a well pump that i need to work around… there is also a couple of board racks just out of the top frame on the left wall. I have two bikes and a wheel barrel that i have to move in & out whenever i want to work but atleast they are on wheels…
It’s definitely a work in progress but i have been able to set up about 85% of it with supplies i had laying around. The plywood i used is from my hurricane protection supply and it’s all screwed together for easy removal should the atlantic get too froggy.
Now i just need to figure the best way to heat it up so i can put some glass on this thing when i get it done. I dont want to wait till spring.
While i’m at it i guess i’ll post my current progress for anyone who is interested ot might have any suggestions…
The board is still a work in progress but, I AM HAVING SO MUCH FUN WITH THIS SO FAR!!! =)
Thanks for giving me an opportunity to share!
Main workshop. Kinda wish i had insulated it better before the winter set in over here as all epoxy work has come to a grinding halt with temps down to -3. Gonna build a hot room as soon as i can feel my fingers again which should get things moving again.
Shaping room is nothing fancy, just somewhere to keep all the dust. The bucket shaping stands are gone now and a mate welded me up some fancy stands.
Yes, I'm excited to see my daughter - its been 4 years since she got married and moved away to Montana, and we haven't seen her since! She's coming to visit for a week, going to LAX to pick her up tonight. But look what has happened to my shaping room! My poor boards-in-progress have been relegated to the junk filled garage!

My boards in progress:
ahh, the sacrifices we make for our beloved family! hahaha
Kokua: That me too the King of Clutter. Plus the season is kicking end and after shaping a few boards it’s hard to get motivated to do a cleaning.
Kind regards,
Surfding
I’m totally new to this site, and new to board building. Shaping a board has always been something that I wanted to try, so I decided to do it. Before I ever shaped a board, I built this room.
I built a 3m X 4m deck in my sons backyard but then extended it to 4m X 5m to make a shaping and glassing shed.
We started building last week.
First the framing...

The divider between the rooms....

Roof frame...with plenty of room for double insulation because of noise and the tropical temps in Queensland...

Coat of green paint and its done.
Just started painting the insides, pics to follow in a week.
surffoils,
lookin good mate...and the backdrop out of thos windows aint to bad either!!
im working in a steel shed 3M X 3M with lined walls (blue walls with lights and shelves) that doubles as a shaping and glassing room! Id be interested to know how the 5M x 4M size goes, great that it allows a divider wall meaning each side can be set up and left, whereas I am need to shufle stuff around to go from shaping to glassing...grrrrrr, but cant complain I make it work, and if I didnt have my 3M X 3M space, I wouldnt have a space at all!
does the dividing wall mean that each 'room' is 2.5M wide X 4M long- these dimensions sound pretty good to me?!
Cheers, look forward to the progress photos

Just a tin shed and a couple of saw horses at the moment
Natural light and lots of mosquitos.

That is beautiful!!!
Saltbush, yes each room is 2.5 X 4, plenty of room to move and for shelving.
We finished painting ahead of schedule, here it is finished....

Would Sir like a custom quad for the weekend ?

Starting on the first board......

Some bays look a bit dark so the brighter blue is a 'happy' choice. 3 X 900 mm flouros on each side. Its all professionally wired up with ceiling lights and power points. This is the view thru the front door.....

Turn left into the glassing room.... 6oz and 4oz rolls, sander, glass offcuts, overalls....

Heres your new quad already glassed and finned....For the walls in the glassing room I mixed 2 cans of purple, one oil based the other one water based and it gives a marbled effect. In the flesh, its a great colour.

On the other wall all the 'clean' stuff like resin and mixers.....

Back to the front door, all the shaping tools and templates....

Finished painting 2 days ago and already theres the quad, various dings to do....

Snaps....

a restoration.....

And plenty of my own ideas to work on.
Thankfully I have the ever present BLONDZILLA for sensible discource on design.....

surffoils
yeh nice, looks like quite the "backayrd" set up!
Thats it, my next one will be the 5M X 4M with divider wall set up. as we are likely to be moving relatively soon, I'll keep the 3M X 3M sweatbox, but when looking at the new house purchase I will have to keep an eye out for enough space for the 5M X 4M temple!
Cheers

My room is too messy to post pictures. I wish I had the beautiful clean rooms I see posted. Where do you guys find the time to have such clean rooms?
Howzit surfding, Don't feel bad,I was the King of Clutter and my shop was always a mess with cobwebs and a coral sand floor. But the boards came out great, just a matter of not stirring up the dust. Always thought the menehune would come and clean it at night but they were a no-show. A messy room is a busy room.Aloha,Kokua
Surfding,
My room may look clean in that picture, but keep in mind that picture was taken after I got the room all set up and before I ever shaped a board in it. Your should see it now! YIKES! I just finished an 11’6" SUP where I had to take 1" of volume out of the blank. I don’t have a hotwire and was too impatient to build one. So I ended up with almost a garbage can full of shavings that I had to blow off of every surface in the room (no dust collector on the planer either). Not to mention that I never put my tools back where they’re intended to go. If I took a picture now, you wouldn’t recognize it.
Thats reasuring!
Hot Wiring EPS is worth the effort. Leave as little planner work as possible it will save you time and mess.
Best set of racks I've ever shaped on (and I've shaped on a bunch). I wish I could take credit for the design/fabrication. Fully adjustable and single-point attachment to floor means nothing to kick plus easy clean-up. 3'' OD square tubing with 2.5'' sleeved. 4 tapcons into concrete floor solid as after well over 5000 boards
nice racks…but its the trim router on the floor that makes me feel at home.
