The Surfer's Triathalon

Since I do all three of the events known for a triathalon, here's my idea:

          Ride 1 speed cruiser bike 30 K

Paddle board of your choice 1 K

Run on the packed wet sand 5 K

Maybe you can take your I-phone in its water casing while out paddling so you can catch the latest on Sways, or mount it to your bike...  I know I will!

And after we can have a Stella drinking contest.

I am thinking seriously about this idea!!

On the other hand.....

Kensurf's letting me go!

That is...shaping my first board by my lonesome!  : )

I am thinking a retro fish, with some sweet swirls?

Wish me luck.  Such stoke!

Are these things you do for fun, or do you have too much time on your hands?

Is stuff you do "for fun" supposed to be turned into an ordeal?

don't understand tri-atha-geeks, what and to whom are they trying to prove?

The PIBC (Phillip Island Boardriders Club) used to have an 'Iron Man' contest every year around the weekend of the regional ASA contest.

It only ever drew the most hardcore of entrants.

Surfing didn't feature too highly, but the winners became instant legends.

...And before that the Island Boardriders held what was called " the chicken run "

This entailed participents to line up on the beach with their board of choice and upon the starting whistle, start paddling for the horizon..

The last paddler left would win...

Legend has it that one winner was eventually rescued by a passing crayboat...!

I think theres room here for a more realstic surfers tri..

  A 3 hour surf,

followed by 3 bottles of beer,

followed by a 3 hour snooze.

 or

A 3 hour drive to the beach,

 then a 3 ding session,

followed by a $300 speeding fine on the way home to round out the day.

Ha!! I just laughed my ass off in my office. Thanks for that. Great way to start my day.

My biggest is a 1.5 hour drive, half hour hike on sketchy trails with an 800 foot drop in elevation, surf for 3 hours, give or take, at a semi- sketchy rock point - hike back up (Don’t forget the wet wetsuit on the back, and the board under the arm…), then drive back home… Some times you gotta make a call based on the amount of day light left to make it back up the trail…

Taylor's response is great but surfoil's is LOL hilarious. Big props for a good laugh, and I can use that one on the wife; when she asks me why I'm passed out on the couch, I can tell her I'm doing the ''surfer's triathalon''!!!

My version -

Spend 3 hrs. in the car ( round trip )  …  or more

Get 3 decent rides ( after dealing with crowds / marginal conditions )  …  or perhaps  3 memorable moves will suffice

Consume a 3 item consolation meal on the way home  ( pie , muffin and coffee ,  or  hamburger , choc bar and coke  - whatever ! )

Do it Whitney.  Don't listen to these guys.  Keep it under big brother's radar.  No permits, no insurance, just turn up if you're in.  Do the run soft sand though.

Jon’s right Whitney , it’s a great idea.

If I had the guts to commit to an event like that , it’d motivate me to train - get healthy , and bump my surfing up a notch as well , hopefully.

He’s right about the red tape too , keep it low key  - NZ’s bad enough nowadays , I hate to think what the US is like.

My idea for a surfers triathlon goes like this…

  1. Surf for five hours

  2. Consume very large amounts of take away food on the mission drive home

  3. Spend at least three hours in the spa and drink a beer or twelve

  4. Stumble out of spa in the early hours of the morning and drip water all over the carpet

  5. Crash into bed (literally)

  6. Repeat

I am not a Triathlete.  But I do know that it’s all about the natural drugs and the exceptional the fitness.

What is an uncomfortable “ordeal” to some, is pure pleasure to others.  No need to prove anything to anyone, the body knows.  The events just help one stay focused on the plan.  There is only one winner but everyone still comes out to play…cause they like it, it’s fun!

Most surfers or high risk sports types, never understand endurance sports because in extreme sports the drugs get brain dumped very early on in the activity.  But they also burn off quickly.  That’s why surfers are so addicted to the “next wave”.

Enduance activities dump the drugs long and slow and the effects are longer lasting.

Didnt they just do this in Oceanside bout 6-8 weeks ago.

They closed N. Side of the pier to surfing for the paddleboard aspect.

I was hanging out.

Look it up!

Thanks for adding that perspective Bill B…

As one who use to train and do triathlons, and kept surfing… You got it right on… Great fitness, great challenge, great “high.”

Gotta say though, for me, when it starts to get big enough… I start to get “high” just thinking about it and once I jump in… Wow!!!  Now I’m almost out of my mind… setting out side, paddling for one, taking 'em on the head, etc… You know…

i'd suggest for surfers that we reverse the run and the paddle.  5K paddle on a stock longboard and a 1K sprint at the end.

this would be a great event to run in conjunction with local surf contests.  the waterman's contest here on the space coast has a similar event...but no biking...yet.

No you have it completely backwards. You start with the Beer....then the nap,.....then the food.  Then if it's clean and 5 ft you go surfing for 1 hr.

I'll follow you on a motorcycle or boat for the rest of that stuff mentioned

Surfer’s triathalon…

Get up at dawn and go surfing till you get hungry, then go home and eat and rest.

Go back for a midday surf till you get hungry, then go home and eat and rest.

Go back for a late afternoon session and surf till you get hungry, then go home and eat and rest.

It’s best if you live right next to, or within a mile or two from the spot you surf.

Otherwise, skip the go home part and just go in eat and rest.

If endurance and verstility is the basis of a triathlon, then maybe the surfers triathlon should be to ride a classic longboard for a couple of hours, then a modern shortboard for a couple of hours, then an alternative design for a couple of hours. No breaks, no rest in between, just like a real triathlon.

A few categories for prizegiving could be the highest total score overall, highest wave count overerall (maybe broken down to the three above categories too), highest scoring wave (per category too), etc, etc.

The food and drink and rest can be later, when everyone sits around patting everyone else on the back telling each other how  they all ripped, etc, etc.

Could be hell, but could be fun.

All these ideas are awesome! hahah.

from surffoils:

"A 3 hour drive to the beach   then a 3 ding session,  followed by a $300 speeding fine on the way home to round out the day."

love it.   It would be real fun to do this  & raise money for a surf-related charity.  don't go stealing my idea now! : )

peace.
