I put the facets on he side of the board (just as in the 101 Video) and I made allowance for the fact that my board is a 10 footer not six, and I was doin’ a 50/50 rail job. Sadly, I let my enthusiasm get in the way of my brain. Instead of blending the line between the two facets, I blended the top line to bottom mid rail, so I now have, a some what dome to the deck which doesn’t look too bad but I reckon, its wrong. I put the bottom rail on anyway, but it looks kind of wierd. Maybe I’m just looking at it through tired eyes??? Or is my 10ft log hours away from a Mini Mal?? Yuk!!! Any thoughts guys??? Love Peaman
i’m feeling for you peaman, been there and will probably be there again, wallowing in the self-doubt that a novice feels after sweating for hours and then thinking that the creation doesn’t look quite right. the agony and (occaisional) ecstasy of board-building. that said, if you were shooting for a 50/50 i think the rail edge should have a degree of radius to it, and that radius would be a result of how knifey or soft of a 50/50 you wanted. the apex of that radius should be near halfway between the plane of the bottom, and the plane of the deck at the edge of the outline (before your bevels). someone please correct me if i’m wrong. peaman, are you saying that you ended up with a point at the apex of the rail instead of a radius? you have to think like Spiccoli when you’re in this position. “DUDE…i can fix it!” hopefully you’ll get some more feedback here, i just wanted to break the ice and give you my 2 cents.>>> I put the facets on he side of the board (just as in the 101 Video) and I > made allowance for the fact that my board is a 10 footer not six, and I > was doin’ a 50/50 rail job. Then start slowly, looking around the board sighting the rails from nose and tail, top then bottom. This way it gives you a quadroshapic view, after you’ve done this, then start to retune your rails. It’s amazing how little it will take to change a sows ear into a silk purse, ask Kevin Casey

Guys, thanks for that. I’m up early and feeling fresh, so its off back to the bay, to sort it out!! It’s in situations like this that you need someone’s experience, and second opinion, and seeing as I live I London, miles from the coast, there are not too many shapers around here to call on. So, even though most of you guys are on the other side of the world, I really apreciate your help. I can do it! I will do it!!

Its just a surfboard Peaman,it will ride just fine because it came from your own two hands. You will never build the perfect board in this life.Beware though…board building is an addiction that can destroy normal lifestyles, foam dust in the bed caused me my first divorce.“Pip Pip cheerio! and all that rot”…I love England.
