I just got the thicker than water dvd from best buys- $14!! at local surfshops-$32!! more than two times the price! anyway…There is a scene where they talk about this green single fin board that was shaped out of an old longboard…well, the flex fin on that thing looks perfect for my retro single fin board…anyone know anything about this fin? it has a perfect rake and flex to it…and its big at the tip…loks perfect! I got the true ames norm flex for my single fin egg and that board came to life!!! its not right on my retro(surfRX single)…but the one in this movie looks perfect. Anyone know who made this fin and where i can get it? it kind of looks like that squrrel fin but with lots of flex. Thanks!
I thought that it looked like the squirrel cutaway fin. Check out the commentary feature on the DVD; they talk about that board and fin http://www.longboardhouse.com/fins.htm. On a side note, the surf shop may have been selling the DVD/sound track CD edition. Hope this helps you.
“too” Sorry about that–I was agreeing that I thought it looked like the squirrel too, and I posted before proof-reading my message.
I wouldnt use that fin, I’ve always found that a fin that has been mutilated away from the clean outline of a shark and dolphins fin has a very limited compatability with a wide range of surfboards.
its not the squirrel…cuz there is a part where kelly bends the fin…and the squrrel is a rigid fin. I watched it again and noticed that its glassed on. If I could find out who made the board, maybe he can make me that fin?
TRI FINS ARE DANGEROUS who posts here from time to time wrote about that board on another BB . He had said that Britt Merrik had shaped that board and moonlight had glassed it. He had also said if you weren’t a world class surfer forget about trying to ride it but I think that had more to do with the shape than the fin. But it does look like they are struggling in the movie more than a couple times the fin seemed to pop out.
thanks for the info. This is the board im looking for a fin. I just cant seem to find a fin that makes it come alive. I got the norm flex for my egg shape board, and liked that board 10 times more…so i was hopeing i could do the same with this ine…and when i saw how snappy that board in the movie was, i thought i found the answer. I am not a world class surfer by a long shot…thanks
you may want to check the JT fine series at for the Island fin or the Karma Cutaway Flex at www.finsunlimited.com and also the Yater classic or small Greenough 4A at www.trueames.com. I use the 8.0 Yater classic in a 6’10 T.Maus retro single and it works great. In smaller or more playful surf, I have also used the 9.0 L-Flex in this board…works great, but when it gets bigger or very hollow, it tends to get very loose. However, this can be fun and may be worth checking. http://http://www.finsunlimited.com/fins/jt_island.html
thanks dub…
that fin doesn’t flex…
If you read my post, I mention the using both flex fins and non-flex fins in the board I describe. Hence, the link to the JT Island fin. I would try both flex and non-flex fins…sometimes a flex fin is not the right / best choice depending on surf conditions. Both sites have a pretty good description of the characteristics of the fins they offer. The guys at Fins Unlimited are also pretty helpful…I ordered all my JT fins over the phone and discussed them a bit.
must have misread your post-surf on!
Well, I actually should have made it clearer. I just wanted to suggest some other options.
