I read the archives saying that to do a gloss coat I need to thin the resin and make it runny like water so it comes out shiny. Some people said to mix styrene monomer to the resin. Unfortunatley, the place were I get my stuff (resin, blanks, fiberglass, etc.) doesn’t carry any styrene. Can I just use acetone? or maybe paint thinner? Thanks for all your help.
Howzit Daklaw, Seems a little strange that they sell materials to build a board but not styrene, do they sell surfacing agent? If you aren't in the US it may have a different name. like "resin thinner". Acetone can be used but it's not what you really want to use, Acetone is for resin clean up and styrene is resin thinner. You could also go to a local board builder and see if they could sell you some , it doesn't take much. Good Luck, Aloha,Kokua
Just checked your profile and it says you live in NewPort Beach, Go to Basham's in San Clemente, I'm sure they have styrene and anything else you could possibly need.
Actually, I was talking about Bashams (haha). I went there last weekend to get my stuff and I didn’t see any Styrene. I’m going to check again. I did think it was weird they didn’t have it. I was just wondering about the other solvents because I can’t go to Bashams until the weekend, but I can go to my local hardware store so I thought I could just buy some acetone or paint thinner to use. Anyways, thanks for the help!

*its funny about Bashams on the weekend, they’re only open for an hour so as soon as the doors open there’s a mob of people just running around trying to get all their stuff trying to get as much as they can in an hour. Pretty crazy.
Howzit Daklaw, Try Ace Hardware, one near the beach. Over here on Kauai you can buy all the materials to build a board there even styrene. Here’s something that might work if you’re lucky, go to the SanClemente Surf Shop (used to be Herbie Fletchers ) and see if the owner Nudo is around. Tell him a friend from Kauai told you to see if he would sell you some styrene since Basham’s was out of it. When ever I’m in S.C. i get hooked into fixing friends boards and he has sold and even given me materials, just make sure you bring a container to put it in. I don’t think he knows me by my business name so if he asks for a name just tell him a guy named Mike sent you, might work. Aloha,Kokua
Basham’s gets real busy, and they sometimes don’t have time to fill cans with resin, etc. and restock the shelves. If you don’t see it on the shelf just ask for it and they’ll fill you up a can. I add additional styrene and SA to my Sylmar gloss resin, it’s a big improvement. Never add paint thinner to resin. You can use lacquer thinner to remove residue from brushes after you’ve cleaned them in acetone a couple of times.
Thanks for all the help guys. I went back to Basham’s today and I asked them for styrene, and sure enough they had it. The guy also told me the had gloss too. So I just took 16oz. of gloss instead of styrene. So I guess most of these shops carry gloss coat resin apart from lam and sanding resins. Well, off to glassing my board. Later.
I’m not sure how applicable it might be to working with resin for an extended period (i.e. UV catalyst and working indoors), but I had read before and use this method when I work with regularly catalyzed resin, that heating or warming up the resin youre going to use makes it a lot more viscous than using it at warm temperature. Of course, you have to compensate for the temperature of the resin when adding catalyst, but especially around room temperature give or take a few degrees, doing this on gloss or any resin coat to keep it thin and clean looking works well. I would try it out a few times, like when doing the final coat on a repair, before doing an entire gloss coat to see how it works out for you. I like it because I avoid handling one more chemical that I would otherwise need to.
