Thorsisle II

Does anyone know what happend to the Norweigian freighter Thorsisle II?

NO what happened?

i don’t know…did it capsize in small fla. surf?

yeah it was run over and sunk by Surftech at La Jolla shores

Folks, Seriously, I don’t know what became of her. I made surf a trip from San Francisco to Fiji and many points in between on the Thorsisle II in 1972. I am writing a book and would like to find some photo’s of the ship. It had Norwegian registry and was operated at the time by American Steamship as a merchant freighter. I’ve searched the internet exhaustively and have not found anything.

seriously, have you checked gov’t agencies that deal with navel issues and vessel ownership?

Hey Tim I thought you were joking, I remember your stories from that trip classic, call me. KP.ps. never under estimate the flip of a coin.

You might want to double-check your info:

American Steamship Company operates ore carriers on the US great lakes, not freighters/passenger boats in the Pacific. Another company of that name ( name changed to the American Line ca. 1892 ) did Atlantic ( Europe-US ) runs, not Pacific.

According to the Norwegian Ship Registry ( http://www.nis-nor.no/regform_en.shtml has a search) there has never been a ship of Norwegian registry called the Thorsisle II, Thorsisle or anything especially close.

There was a ship called SS Thorsisle that worked the pacific islands route ( see http://images.aucland.com/ImgUsers/12228/12228762_Big.jpg - looks like a passenger-freight steamship, possibly one of the many WW II ships bought, renamed and used by small companies in the '50s and later) in the 50s and a Thorsisle II might have been built as a successor, operated by the Pacific Islands Steamship Company. What sort of ship was it, steam or motor vessel, passenger-freight or containers or ??

For what it’s worth, similar routes were operated by the South Seas Steamship Company ( what a helluva romantic business name that is ) which was acquired by Columbus Lines which in turn were acquired by Hamburg Sud - http://www.hamburgsud.com/WWW/EN/index.jsp - you could do a sight worse than contacting them, as they may have some information on their competitors or have bought up the company.

Hope that’s of some use

doc…

Doc, Thanks. Very helpfull. Regards, TB

I had a quick look at the search engines here in Norway, and found that the Norwegian shipping company Thor Dahl Shiping used to call all their boats Thor… something and found that they owned the original Thorsisle in 1962. They’re no longer in shipping, but still exist and may have historical records. Try contacting them at post@thordahl.no Other company names that keep poping up in relation to the company are Pacific Islands Transport Line, Norse Oriental Line and Christensen Canadian African Lines. Maybe they can be helpful. Good luck.
