Thats interesting. I have used it before with another layer of 4 oz and the board turned out very very light. I would like to use S cloth I just don’t know where I can aquire it on the gold coast.
So basically this is the stuff I would buy except without the carbon. They use regular quad axial on the tail of Mayhem boards but to me this looks like a much thinner weave than a 4 oz e cloth or regular.
My guess on the 3/4 piece would be that it’s a 3/4 length coverage, ie: it goes from the tail 3/4 of the way up the board, efffectively adding more dent/buckle resistence under the front and back foot and saving a bit of weight by not running the full length of the board. You see this approach a lot on super-light pro boards and why they buckle a lot at the nose.
So my guess is that 4/4/(3/4) would be 2 full layers of 4oz and a 3/4 length layer of 4 oz. I could totally be wrong on that, but seems like a valid assumption.
As lawless suggests its a 3/4 length of cloth which goes under a full length (nose to tail) 4 oz normally. Adds the desired strenght without adding too much weight up by the nose , reducing swing weight etc…Better to cap a 5 or 6 oz 3/4 with a full length 4 oz over to get a decent laminate as the 4 oz on top creates a smoother finish with less wells for resin to sit at filler coat stage (lighter).
So many ways to skin a blank… Im trying the 4oz Quad axial from shapers at the moment and i have done a full deck capped with a 4 oz s-cloth over it with epoxy glass on a pu blank. I think the quad axial will definitely be stronger than just 2 standard 4 oz layers of glass because of the bracing effect of having fibers orientated all ways but no doubt you could achieve the same strength with 2 layers of s-cloth if you were to orientate one later at 45% but thats not feasible because of the width of a roll of cloth and it being very wasteful…
anyway just my 2 cents
Thanks man I have sent a PM regarding more infomation
Ive glassed probably a 1000 boards with x-cloth and its fine to do a hand lay-up. Adds abit more weight than normal cloth and is harder to wet out and keep air free. So i wouldnt recommend it for someone with only a few laminations. From what ive been told it gives a thicker laminate (more strength), and stiffens up the flexy eps a touch.
You can get it in 4 and 6oz and the new colan australia stuff is the best stuff ive used lays real flat and smooth under a layer of cloth.
Okay so not quite sure what a hand lay up is but you believe the 4 ounce x cloth is heavier. I was thinking about going with a
4 oz quad axial and 2 oz e cloth with 4 oz on bottom.
I can tell you have experience so please give me an honest opinion btw I am using a PU blank and polyester resin.
Cheers!
hand lay up is just normal way with a squegee.
just glass it normal 4 x (4x4) or add some 6 if you want it abit heavier/stronger. dont bother with 2 oz
Yeah, well my goal is to get as light as possible with a PU. Reckon 4 quad axial and 4 oz e cloth would be lighter than the regular two 4 oz or maybe a a 3/4 patch for the quad axial.
No, again 4oz quad axial laminate in usual way is heavier than standard 4oz surf glass. No doubt that 4oz quad axial + 4oz ended far heavier than 2x4oz.
