thruster vs fish

Just not to long ago it was all about the thruster but now all i see is fishes and retro’s

why the change?

I’v never liked fishes (thats the reasin for the nik name) But now I’m re-thinking my unfounded hatered

only cuz there must be a reasin, it cant be cuz thay look weird, or cool or what not.

So my question is if the thruster is not up to date then why go retro?

And again why the change ?

ALOHA! FISHY

Personal choice , I don’t particuly like fish , however they have their place . I didn’t like twinnies but tell that to mr. These bonser thingies and widow makers , they have my atention.

then, make a three fin bonzer please , ‘panny’ !

“Fishy” , what most people seem to call ‘fish’ [here in west oz, at least ] are , in reality , actually only swallowtail thrusters , perhaps 19" wide max.

So , it gets confusing eh ?

re : the steve lis style twin keeled 1970s fishes ?

… I have seen a total of four copies in the last two months here in perth .

But , I’m sure around byron bay, there must be HEAPS of them !!

I say , ride whatever you enjoy the most , and what works best for you , in the waves you ride most …don’t worry about what others think !

ben

i mostly ride fishes, here in cornwall we mostly have shit choppy surf with no power and the fishes go real nice in that.

cool… so you’re a pom , eh ?

welcome !!

‘fatbaslardass’ and ‘woody waverider’ [among other brits !] will now have another “geezer” to run amuk with …good stuff !!

so…

what dimensions are your fish mate ?

who makes a good fish in 'git’land , then ?

and [last question , I promise ! …for now…] …IS it a twin keel one ?

… , mate !

ben

Don’t talk fish or thruster, instead talk dimensions of boards you ride, and fin config.

Peeps think a fish always goes better in weak waves… try a 22.5" wide thruster at 5’6" against a 19" wide fish at any length.

Since fish can range from 19"-23" wide, and lengths from 5’4" to 6’6", it can basically be anything for smaller than DOH wave sizing.

Peeps think fish always goes fast. WRONG! A fish designed to turn well doesn’t go as fast as a flat rockered thruster with enough planing surface to get going.

Think in dimensions I like that better my 6’6"x19"x2" 3/4 …lost can still hold up on the Great lakes thats right the great lakes…and its like i should be riding a fish cuz theres no power to the swell.

But back to the BS i went to get a 6’7" to shape a thruster and i was tolled it was out of date, that no one rides the thruster eny more nor shapes them

so I’am like a 20 year old grampa who is a complet kook?

oh well Aloha!

I’d likely ignore the kook who told you that ridiculous story!

Let him live in his own dream world, and you go on making what you want to make.

So get a 6’9"R if you want thickness, get something else if you want thinner.

Don’t let one tunnel visioned salesman alter your choice of surfboard design equipement.

i can’t believe that someone actually said thrusters are out of date and aren’t made anymore! you would definately benefit from not taking any advice from that person.

Well I know there still around like EVERYWHERE all the mags all the vids but, not with more down-to-earth shapers that I look up to it’s all about the FISH!

I know the thruster is going to be here for a long time and so will the retro’s, fishes, bronzers, swallow tails…and all the rest of the B S

So I whould like to see some thrusters posted some time!

Aloha

FISHY

you’re right, the thruster has its place among all other shapes…did you know people still ride longboards??? (attempt at humor)

I think the deal at the moment is that the Thruster has completely dominated the surfboard world for 20 years or so and people are starting to look for alternatives simply to spice things up a bit, or to have an alternative that better suits their needs at a particular break or in particular conditions. Other people maybe of a lesser surfing ability or living near weak waves are finding it tough trying to catch waves on a modern Thruster. Some people (me for example) like the idea of riding as many different types of boards for the different challenges and experiences they present. As far as competetive shortboarding is concerned the Thruster still rules the roost by a long shot and I’m pretty sure it will continue to do so.

Anyone who dismisses any type of design out of some stubborn mindset (i.e. not riding a Fish cos it’s “just a fad”) is possibly missing out on an amazing experience.

At the end of the day who cares what anyone else thinks, as long as it puts a grin on yer chin ride whatever you damn well like!

Well chip in the last month I have put side bits on my 7’0 single and made it a widow set up . it has a deep double barrel concave and will be my winter board or not so warm board. other 7’0 . any way done no photo’s camera cactus.

It’s not “all about the fish”. It’s all about surfing.

The equipment that I ride does not work well for the guy next door but we surf together all the time at the same spots.

I know the BOARD can’t control the man, MAN controls the board

and I know if it makes you happy ride it and so on…and yes we forgot the odd board out the LONG BOARDS I still bust the 8’3" all the time cuz on the lakes the surf is pretty crappy a good persent of the time

Now that you bring it up I think I need to see more Long boards

NO I need to see more of every style of board

so…I’m off to look for something new or some one show me something new maybe something I might have missed …but not that Penguin shape.

ALOHA! FISHY

Consider a mid 6’ performance shorty that floats higher than any equivelent sized fish, single fin to make the most of slower moving swells, wide around 22" and thick at the tail and rails to get going early in slopy swells, and mainly a flat bottom for early planing, highest top speeds, with some V out the backfoot for control and easy banking of such a wide bunker board.

A 6’7" x 19" version, at 3" thick and flat deck, floats my 155 lbs nose and tail dry!

yeah should have thought of the dimensions of my fish, its a 6’0 x 19 1/2 x 2 1/2 with an 8 inch tail and a thruster set up, i wanted to make it a twin fin but the shaper was like nah no point (no clue why he thinks that) . its the first board i made, with a a shaper called luke young in my surf science course.

cool… so you’re a pom , eh ?

whats a pom?

yeah i guess the whole fish thing is probably due to that people get boared of the thrusters (some one mentioned before), and they just go great in choppy waves (345 days per year…)

When Australia was settled and the English kept sending convicts. They were Prisoners Of Her Magesty . POHM (POM). If you have never heard it before . Go to an England v Australia test match (cricket) and in the unlikely chance of England winning or getting in front you will hear " pommie b!@#$rd" Thats a pom

shame they didnt sent me over… getting a ticket to oz for commiting a crime? im up for that
