thruster.....

Some time during the remainder of this year , I’d like to make a thruster in the 6’4 to 6’ 8" range .

What sort of nose and tail rocker do people use ?

I am 44yo , 5’10 and 140 lbs, roughly , and intend using this board in headhigh and slightly bigger , often bumpy beachbreak . It may sound a bit big a board to some , but as I usually ride either my 5’11 fish , or my 7’ single fin , a good “in-between” size is what I’m looking at .

…The “canyons” on the bottom of my 6’5 egg-shaped board cause me grieve on bumpy days , for anyone who’s wondering…

thanks in advance for any and all positive help / advice / experience[s] shared …

ben

On thrusters in that size surf for me I like a little bit of tail rocker to get in the pocket easier. Not too much nose rocker as its good to drive down the line in hollow beach breaks.

In smaller points I’m a flat rocker guy in Hollow aussie beachies I like abit of rocker.

Chip may I suggest a couple of blanks . I use burford and burford only but a 6’7"b works well nice rocker take a couple of nips with the planer on the tail and walla. for more rocker try a 6’8" p or j the p has a lot more rocker. or the 7’0" j I use these alot. try speed fins if you have trouble getting them give me a bell. get a decent stringer the stock is 1’8. to small go 3/16 or 7.5mm. Take your time and go hard.

thanks Josh and John !

John , how many inches nose and tailrocker does the 7’ blank you mentioned give you , please ?

cheers !

exactly no idea, but it is plenty. I use it for 6’8 up to 7’0. lots of nose flip maybe get onto burford or a local bloke who stocks their stuff.

Chipster,

Push the tail rocker a far as you can in the last 8- 12 inches, just at the trailing edge of the lead fins. Run the hard rail edge up from the tail to about 20-24" inches, make it sharp. Nose rocker? Just go with what the blank has? Bottom: nose flat, to 1/4 in single concave under the front foot, to a double concave in the fin area, Flat out the last 3 in tail area. rear fin set at 3 1/2, side fins set at 12". Toe 1/8 cant 6.

It will fly. it doesnt matter what the plan shape is with this configuration, use it on a longboard, use it on a shortboard.

… thanks heaps Jay , that’s VERY helpful !

I’m thinking 6’4 - 6’8 x 18 1/2" - 18 3/4" x 2 3/8" , so far … I haven’t decided on nose and tail measurements yet . I like a pintail.

pintail good

Chip, mebbe you oughta think about eating some food first, eh?

Lessee, for a 6’6" thruster, flatter tail rocker might be 2 1/8", on the high end 2 5/8", I’d prolly choose 2 1/4" to 2 3/8". The more aggressively you surf, the more rocker to use.

Nose rocker 5.25 inches.

For your weight, width 18.5-18.75 inches with wide point centered to 2 inches back of center, and a 14.25 inch tail with an 11-11.5" nose. Maybe some wings behind the rail fins if you feel like getting fancy. Hard rails from the tail up to about 6 inches past the fins. Single to double concave flattening in the tail. Max depth under the front foot, about 1/4"-3/8". A little vee (paneled concaves) between the fins.

Homemade fins - rotating rail fins, of course.

hahaha …CLASSIC* , mate !! You would be surprised [or not?] how many of my fellow surfers / friends say that to me , as they see me sitting there shivering after half an hour [even WITH my hood on ] I last three to four hours max , before [usually] my feet go numb , or I need to go home to eat … ben * classic , and true …

Thanks very much for those measurements Dave…very helpful !

I like those dimensions. I ride a 18 3/4" width on thrusters, I like that width better than 18". I think the dimensions are spot on for your/my size and weight in sizeyer beach break.
