Time for one board before mexico

Well, I think I have time to do one board before mexico… That’s if all my supplies show up this week…

I’m torn on what to make, as there are two that are missing from my quiver that I’ll just NEED to make sooner or later. With the boards I’m already planning to take, I’m covered from knee to probably just over head-high. That’s really my comfort zone anyway, but you never know when you’ll be called upon to step outside of that zone. Do I make the board for the waves that are smaller than I’m looking forward to, or the board for waves that are a little bigger and more critical than I’m looking forward to?

So, my options are:

a. 8’ wide and flat minilog for small stuff, or mush that my fish just won’t power through.

b. 6’6" bonzer, made from my MR-style twinnie template, but with the tail pulled out into a pin instead of swallow (think spacecake), to hold in on the waves that my fish and twinnie won’t handle.

i say stick with the bonzer so you can rip the bigger shit…

but instead of a pin or rounded pin, how about a diamond tail??? pull a single to double concave out through the tail and a hard shapre edge on the rail 24" up on the tail… sounds good to me

I say build the flat minilog.

Then, by Murphy’s Law, you know it’ll be steep, hollow and big when you go.

You won’t have the bonzer, but you can sneak a thruster under the Murphy’s Law radar (keep it in one of those reflective covers), and you’ll have a blast.

Shwuz, I agree with the diamond tail Bonzer idea. I’ve seen quite a few friends go to Mex & Central America this summer - no flatness at all this year (hope that doesn’t jinx ya  ). No shortage of swell at all.

Make the tanker when you get back to Tejas.

Yeah, it’s been a great year for swell on the west coast this year. Hope I don’t get too much stinkeye when I totally kill it with my attendent flatspell. It’s been a BAD year around here for waves, I do totally deserve to get into some nice waves…

Maybe I shouldn’t be the superstitious primitive, and actually make the board for the waves I hope to be riding. At least I’ll look prepared as I stare at lake Pacific for two weeks.

Well, there’s always beer.

Sitting on the beach watching worthless crap come in or sitting on the beach watching OH+++ perfection that you know you could rip if you just had enough board.

Choice sounds pretty clear to me.

Beer goes well with fishing. I prefer having a bit too much board rather than too little board. Especially if I spent a lot of time and money to get the the surf. Mike

I vote for the bonzer, and I’d keep the swallow. Tail designs are mostly aesthetics- fish, sharks, dolphins and whales have swallow tails. Just my 2 cents.

wow! if and when you make that 8’ wide board please post pix!

you could have 4 people hanging ten on that thing! LOL…

anyways, i vote for the bonzer. i think previous responses hit the

nail on the head… either way, have fun!

id be looking at a 6 6 to 6 8 rounded pin

with soft forgiving rails and a normal thruster fin cluster(easier to get right)

mabe a slightly larger centre fin

go for the stiff carbons

nice curvey outline and a bit of width in the tail and nose for paddle

and some volume under chest

maybe 19 1/2 wide

keep it a bit stiffer and fatter up front and thined out tail a bit so you dont have to push to hard to set the rail.

prolly i might add a bit more rocker but i doubt it

not a mini gun as such

just a nice shorty that is a bit more forgiving and will work in up to 2 by overhead and paddle well

thats what id be making for myself if i was heading for the islands or mehcico

I’m actually taking one kinda like that:

6’6" and 19 3/4"

Its for a friend down there, but he knows I’m hanging on to it for the duration of the trip. I’ve ridden it, but it is definitely on the lower extreme for volume for me

dats the one

that looks like it would be peeeerfect

in fact

i might just have to copy that

my mini gun i built sux

to narrow in the tail! and to much nose rocker

why the fish??? i would think that a fish would cause a lil drag… unless youre making like a retro fish bonzer with a double pin type tail… which sounds crazy

i would just stick to that diamond tail and thank me later for the fun you had on you diamond tail bonzer
