Tinted Pin Line (not opaque)

My first single color resin tint went ok.  I really do not want a pin line on this board.  Just the old school darker rails. That said, my cutlap has some imperfections that I prefer not to live with.

So my thought was to tape off a pin line and then apply epoxy resin tinted the same color as the rails to achieve a crisper more fluid edge (on sanded fill coat).  Has anyone tried this?  Some contrast is acceptable but I prefer to draw as little attention to the line as possible.  Also, would it be best to position the  pin line mostly on the deck or rail side of the lap, or right down the middle considering the tint is not opaque?  Board was glassed with greenroom epoxy. Planning to do a PE gloss coat.  Thanks…

deck pre fill coat…

I am curious to hear how some more experienced guys make it look nice.

I have tried to make pinlines with using pigmented epoxy at this stage in the build. The problem is if you plan on sanding it, you will most likely sand some of the color off.

I always end up having to wait till the very end and use acrylic paint, or just do the epoxy pinline at the end but don’t sand it.

This is from the peanut gallery so take with a grain of salt:)

Otherwise board looks sweet, I like the color of blues used.

Most pinlines are done to cover up a cut lapline.

Most laps cut by hand show some irregularities somewhere,

A tinted pinline will work.

It just shows the cutline beneath it.

Sand carefully.

Or use a transparent paint.

Thanks Barry,  I think I will give it a go.  As mentioned this will go over sanded epoxy fill coat.  I plan to do a PE gloss coat.  To minimize rookie errors, would you recommend doing the tinted pin line in epoxy or PE?  If epoxy, how long must I wait before gloss?  Its in the 80s here.  Gracias…

Epoxy sticks to itself better than PU. Remember that while you can do a PU gloss over Epoxy, the two are different resins. The bond between the two is sketchy. When I do resin pinlines, I use old, thick resin so it wont bleed. Cobalt helps (PU resin). Add a sanding agent with either as you need to sand lightly before gloss. Have fun.

I have some old Poly resin so I think I will just go for the poly pinline and the poly gloss.  Thank you again.

After reading this, screw it, I am going to do the pin line and gloss coat in epoxy.  rather a few imperfections in the gloss than a peely mess in the future. Thx for the warning Barry.

Good call.

I’ve seen poly gloss crack and peel off forever.

I do tint pinlines all the time with polyester.  First time was an accident a long time ago with that old yellow opaque that was really a yellow tint.  Looked so good I kept doing it.  I use straight gloss resin with a moderate drying time so it domes.

Edit: polyester on polyester.  Never done it with epoxy.

when doing pinlines with epoxy i waited for about 30 min after mixing till the resin kicked a bit - that way it won’t bleed and run too much…
