Tips to keep surfing after 50 whaddya got?

It's diet and exercise we all know that. but what are you doing? what types of exercise? swimming? some type of cross training? Might even post a recipe for favorite energy foods to keep you in the water longer ?

stretching before surfing

walking [every day]

occassional bike [cycle] ride

but ....surfing , mainly ...the best !

[ and if not , then , taking water photos , instead ...one of these days I'll take the go pro surfing ... I want to talk to my brother about that [ if / when he comes here , next month ? ]

until about ten years ago ,

skateboarding would also have  featured in that list , but nowadays , I really just want to keep surfing for as many years as possible , and not be out of the water through having become injured unneccessarily

I run a mile a day several times a week.  I used to to that when I was younger too, and lived by the beach and surfed way more, but after 50 it becomes a lot more crucial.  If I had more time and different circumstances I'd do a lot more, training / fitness wise, but for now thats what works for me.

I'd post my energy drinks but they wouldn't be well received - I don't drink them for flavor - lets just say it involves freshly blended aloe vera leaves and cactus from the produce dep't at the Mexican market, the rest you can improvise.  Aloe vera and cactus have a lot of health benefits, I'm of the opinion we don't consume enough raw greens in modern society.

I walk every chance I get.  My wife wants something from the coffee shop?  I want a sandwich from the sandwich shop?  Its a little under a mile round trip, why take the car?  Elevator vs. stairs?  You can guess.

Another thing I do is try to keep all things in moderation - even surfing.  There are a lot of health issues that can result from surfing too much - eye problems, ear problems, skin problems, injuries, etc.  I like to hit dawn patrol, by 7 or 7:30 I'm out of the water, and that's pretty much it for the day.  Any waves after that will be the next day.  Of course there are always exceptions, but thats my rule of thumb.  Also, a lot of the public beaches I surf have showers - when possible I always shower after I get out of the water.

And no I don't skateboard anymore either.  One or two debilitating injuries that keep you out of the water when the waves are good, and you start re-thinking priorities in a whole new light.

For me its not just about staying in the surf.  I'm self-empolyed, and my work is very physically demanding.  I get sick or injured, no income, its that simple.

As they say, works for me, your mileage may vary.

Use a boat to get to the line up

Eat Fritos, Cheetos, Doritos....love the tos.

It's all genetics, if you are put together like crap, then you are not going to last. Poor ligiments, muscle definition, spine etc. you are doomed. You can walk, bike, run.. and do that shit all day long.   But as they say in baseball " You only got so many pitches in that arm kid".   So baby your body, takecare of it. Don't over surf )meaning don't do a 3 hr surf like you did when a kid...don't push it..save it)   You know as they say in surfing " you can only hold your head in that position for so long before your neck gives out."   Or my favorite...." Nice rotor cuff injury"

surf every day that you can…nothing keeps you in shape for surfing, better than surfing.

It's all genetics

Genetics loads the gun, diet pulls the trigger…  All your buds and associates having coronaries, becoming diabetic, even the old arthritis… High intake of sugar and fat is mostly what does the trick, and of course all the chemical flavoring agents, preservatives, conditioners, etc.  I love the Michael Pollen quote, “Eat (real) food, mostly plants, not too much.” That about covers the basics.  If it required a factory or worse, a chem lab, to produce, it ain’t food.

Moderation - moderate amounts of everything - beer - women - wine - song - warmup - wave hollowness - definately surf on a regular basis, and avoid high impact stuff !  Don’t sword fight with Zorro, piss into the wind or f*ck with the kid ! - I’ll get back to you when I think of more

Eat yellow snow.

I’m  59 closing “fast” on 60.

Wave time is number one.  I have been landlocked for years now and do/did a lot of training for a few trips to the beach each year.  I could paddle out in hurricane surf.  But no matter how hard you train, without wave time, you lose your take-off timing.

Used two swim 0.5 miles (arms only) 3x/week – now I use the exercise bike for stamina instead.  Best take-off builder is squat-thrusts and push-ups, I used to do them together but now separately.  For more upper body strength I do chin-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups and dips.  For reflexes and flexibility, I do Karate, Tai Chi and Chi Kung workouts at least twice a week.  My surf-style streetcarvers keep my balance and reflexes honed, and my surf withdrawals bearable.

I finish each daily workout with 2 fine ales.

A credible medical survey found that those with greatest longevity ate right (diets low in saturated fats), exercised regularly, got 7 hours of sleep nightly and drank an ounce of alcohol daily.

My favorite part of the workout is the 2 closing ales.

Without the right lifestyle, genetics catches up with you much faster.

Frank Zappa advised against that.  I trust Frank.

Flatwater stand up paddleboarding 5 miles a day, five times a week…Core, balance, endurance, and you can drink a beer while doing it…And while my wife doesn’t surf she does paddle, and that counts for a lot…

You guys are so full of crap.

I bike 120 minutes everyday, then I pull, clean and jerk, and rebuild my 350 cid small block, then I eat a full 15 lb mound of dehydrated wheat grass,... then I climb the 30,000 ft peak of Mt. Kissambooo. All the while holding down a solid meaningfull 8-6 job, and taking care of my wife of 25+ years, mowing the lawn, and taking my 28 year old son to ballet class in my freshly rebuilt 350 cid El Camino SS.

heres a tip for ya, just go surfing because the days are numbered for ya.

.....You sure got the 'pull' and 'jerk' bit right , you resinheaded funny bugger !

needless to say , if you pull and jerk too much , you may become weak , blind or exhausted  [or all three ?]  before you even make it to the water's edge ?

cheers  (without beers or tears )

Dr. Strange , NICE one !  [....more people need to follow THAT er "advice" , maybe ? ]

I was having severe back and neck pain at age 38. I started Iyengar yoga following the advice of my 82 yr old (and fit) father. I have a VERY good teacher and I practice at home at least an hour a day. I am currently pain free and I feel like I’m 18 again. My surfing has improved as well. Only practice yoga under the guidance of a good teacher, you can jack yourself up if you don’t know what you are doing. My 2 cents, good luck!

In other words, try to find a yogi that is smarter than the average bear, to avoid boo boos.

Indeed.

It's all mental......lose your Mojo and you are in for a long uphill battle. I'm not Fat but I'm no fitness dude....Life beats you down with money issues and health issues and whatever else....want to surf?   go surf ! ...yes...go surf!  GO SURF !

I've had several real life beat downs over the past few years...Get your mind in order..it's not EZ...and then go surf...no amount of anything can replace a good surf....I got my Mojo back this year...but it took alot of hard work...and there's nothing wrong with a 30-45 min session in crappy waves.....that's what get's you ready for the good stuff.

I surfed a longboard for 2 hours today....waist high....my friend did a drive by and left me a voice mail that the waves sucked today..................No.............the waves were great today!

Great to be in the water catching waves.........Stingray........over 50.....ha hahahahahahahahaaaaaaaa !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

in the words of the shoe crew ....

" just DO it ! "

...BUT ...

yep !

...." preach " it , brother Ray !

I , personally ,  am SO glad that , nowadays , people check it for maybe 20 seconds ....and if they don't see a wave , think it's "flat " , or it "sucks"  [or both]

haha , THEY are the suckers , I reckon ! if you ain't in the water when a wave comes , you ain't going to be catching it then , ARE you ? heehee . And you ain't gunna be having any fun  [too bad , how sad !  :) ]  I was in the water for probably a total of ? 50 minutes today . It was sideshore , warm , and basically empty . Caught a fair few waves  . It was waist high , max. But with a mal , surfable and FUN !

Regarding the 'drive-by' surf checks people seem to 'favour' nowadays ?

....Well ...

I put that down to the limited attention span [of society in general ?]  since the introduction of the interne
