To all who wait.............is my board done yet? Superchargers, surfboards, and other stuff, related or not related

…The last couple years have been increasing tough for me.

…My “free” time has shrunk to just about null. When I have some time to myself it’s a battle between building surfies/skaties,Superchargers,or tools vs. going surfing…tough choice huh?

…Lately I’ve been selfish w/ my time…Surfing has won out 90% of the time…I mean surfing…isn’t that what it’s about anyway?

…I have 5 boards for others to finish(4 since last year, mind you).Several sets of SCs to ship (most are finished and packed).A couple sets of Red-X experimental fins for Tom@Daum (Finished ready to deliver).A custom MVG for Mark Spindler(finished, packed, ready to ship). Not to mention ,a board for myself and the Interceptor…which needs to be finished…I will finish everyone else’s first, before mine are completed. This has always been my policy.

…I am going to make a concerned effort in the next month to clear the slate,so I can get back on the track of R&D W/O the brain farting fears of someone going ballistic on me about there???You get the pic.

…I plan on:

…Discontinue building Superchargers…I’ll always use them for myself(I just know better) and possibly for my custom order boards, but as far as to the public,I can’t do it anymore. It sucks up too much time,I don’t get enough $$$ for them(even though I think I charge to much already),and after 7-8 years…I’M BORED AS HELL with making them!

…Custom Surfboards/Skateboards:

…I will (after what I have is already done) take 12 customs a year. That’s a combined amount…and no more… unless you are willing to pay an obscene amount of $$$ for it.

…I will take orders for SCs till the end of July, then no more.EVERYONE is put in a line as to the order I receive them…sorry if you have had to wait along time(just remember people have waited longer than you).

…I am only one person w/ a family, a 50 hr+++ a week job,and both are requiring more and more attention. Not to mention my wife piling more sh*t on me everyday.

…Love it, hate it,live with it…That’s what I have to do.Herb

That’s certainly one path for a true surfer to live…kinda complicated for this old simpleton.

I chose an alternate route, not having a family, staying single, no real job for more than one year, mostly working 4 hours a day, 3 daze a week…whether I needed to or not.

Nowadaze can’t afford to travel for surf, but have enough toys to stay active. Everything I buy is second hand, or thrown away freebies…but all good stuff (10 years ago).

A partial list… good running '85 Honda Civic Hatch

9 Sailboards, 30+ sails, and multiple backups

3 surfboards, but need a high 7' gun for this fall

3 kiteboards and 6 kites for hurting myself

                    Fischer HK and Cannondale 500

5 snowboards, one race, one freeride, one pow, two freestyle

Deciding which two of 5 tennis rackets to use later today

NO house, no property, AARP projects minimum retirement at 62.

Still going, never going strong, but still going

                                      Mr. Unambitous

Good for you, Herb.

It’s awfully hard to say ‘no’ to somebody when they want you to make something or fix something. But when it ceases to be fun, when it’s a grind and when it’s a pain, it’s time to say ‘sorry, can’t do it’. Especially when it’s getting in the way of what’s fun to do and who or what’s got more meaning for you than just banging out something in what was supposed to be your ‘spare time’ and has become an aggravating obligation instead.

Having written that, I think I oughtta print it out and tape it to my shaving mirror. In big red letters. And for my very own personal copy, write “Hey, Stupid” as a salutation at the top. 'Cos I am real good at getting myself into just the same situation. And the inevitable train wreck that comes at the end of it.

Again, good for you, Herb, you’re doing the right thing. And in a couple of months when you’re maybe relaxed a little and gotten in a happier frame of mind, please, please, explain to me how the hell to do it.

Best regards

doc…

Howzit Lee, you mentioned AARP, I hope you’re a member and buy your auto insurance from them, it’s by far the cheapest on the market. I pay $200.00 a year and that’s with extra add ons. I have been semi retired since 1994 but I stiil build about 100 boards a year. Aloha, Kokua
