To SF/Bay Area guys....foam padding??

hey there!

I’ve been having a little trouble finding some REALLY basic 1in foam padding for my newly almost completed surfboard stand (Thanks Bud! kudos!).

anyways, any suggestions on where to get some of this seemingly basic stuff.

checked home depot in san rafael, discount builders supply in SF, and some local hardware stores with no avail.

ps. if you have any extra scraps or whatnot…i’ll pay you a little if necessary.

is it just my poor conception of what the stuff is or am I actually having trouble finding some!?

thanks!

jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

try Bobs’s foam factory.

They’re in Fremont. If you ask for a sample they might send you a bunch for free.

Cheers,

Rio

thanks Daklaw!

do you happen to know by any chance what type of foam?? there are like 20 types but no pictures. just so when I call and they ask me “…a sample of what?” I can get the right kind.

thanks!

jeremy

Carpet works fine, old wetsuit neoprene, couch foam padding, and old pillows.

Next time you see an old couch on the side of the road grab some foam.

There is a foam bed factory in the Mission (Next to Whiz Burgers)if you want to spend money.

Get a good piece for the final screening to make all the lines & shadows disappear.

Have fun

Ian

The stuff is easy to come by for free, but if you can’t find any and need to buy it you can get polyurethane foam (the soft stuff, not Clark type foam) from most upholstery shops - like sofa upholstery shops. Look in the yellow pages.

Hi Jeremy,

I think it goes by upholstery foam or mattress foam.

I also found some free foam for you from craigslist here. Ahh, the powers of craigslist…

Cheers,

Rio

Free from craigslist, it’s the best way to go.

But, while we’re on the subject, check out these guys:

http://www.foamorder.com/about.html

It’s a store that sells all types of foam, and they have a retail location in SOMA, SF. Walk into the store some time, it’s a trip. I got all the foam I needed for a gumby costume there a couple years ago.

Pipe insulation at Home Depot/Lowe’s

yea, blakestahs answer is a god one, but if you get the softer smoother kinf make sure to wrap it in masking tape otherwise you get this black foam dust stuck to your blanks.

And I like the cheap blue camping pads from REI. 1/2" thick, about $12. Pad your racks, put between boards on top of your car, cut 11" x 5" pieces for wrapping sandpaper around & sanding rails, bring a 12" square to put under your butt on cold benches or slip inside a backpack to protect you from hard things, slip a bit inside your wetsuit if your ribs get sore from paddling a board with too much deck dome… endless uses. The stuff never seems to break down or even get flat. Great memory, non-porous cells, cut edges are just as tough as ‘factory’ edges…

You can also find foam at most fabric stores like,

thanks guys for all the help with a seemingly ridiculous question!

benny - i’ll recommend slipping some camping pad foam inside the wetsuit for my dad! haha. his buddy and i took him surfing for the first time a couple of weeks ago on my trip down the coast to san diego. he was complaining about sore ribs for like 2 weeks! oops! maybe it’ll get him back in the water!

thanks again for all the help!

happy MLK jr. day!
