to "Soulnpower" .....

thanks heaps Sjoerd !!

the fins arrived yesterday. they look amazing , so light !!

did you mould them ? i’d love to hear the process , but feel free to p.m. me if its a trade secret , i promise i’ll tell no-one !!

haven’t had a chance to surf them yet , it was only ankle to waist high this morning , so i took the 9’4 out , as a small [7 1/2" ] singley setup .

i suppose i could use the small one-tabbers as sideys on it , once the swell picks up a bit

i’ll keep you informed how the quad setup goes if / when we get the forecast swell…it’s our summer coming soon , so the ol 9’4 will get a workout again

cheers again brother Sjoerd !

ben

hi again Sjoerd !!

well, finally ,  I took them for a test ride today.

Small , sideshore peaks, shallow banks .

Got a few rights that i got a few turns in on . And one waist [nearly pushing chest] high left .....

  impressions ...

the large diffence in size between the black and the blue fins was certainly VERY noticeable . It felt like a turbo-charged twinfin, VERY loose !

But , with the big fins in the front plugs it would have felt even looser and perhaps lacked a bit of drive, i reckon. So I was glad the first test drive was with a twinzer type fin setup [small ones at the front , twinnys at the back]...

I might try it again with slightly smaller back fins , or else slightly larger front side fins , so the difference isn't so noticeable. The plugs on the CD4 Walden are further apart , and further up , than on the average quads i've seen and ridden , so it will be interesting riding these fins in a quadded thruster conversion , or on a narrower quad , as well.

I must say that I'm VERY impressed with the light weight , yet strength and flex , that you've built into these , Sjoerd ! As I say , on a lighter , narrower , more rockered board [such as either my Island or my Gunther Rohn , I reckon they'd be fun , fun , fun !

I have two carbon fibre panels left [out of the 50 or so panels I recently cut and foiled ].... so , I'm thinking , I can make a few GS-sized sideys to go with your carbon twinnies , and see how THAT goes.

I'll also try your little fins as sideys in my 9'4 mal , now that the summer weather and [lack of] swell patterns seem to already be here .....

....to be continued.....

    cheers mate !!

Hi Ben,

Good to hear you’re having fun!

Thanks mate!

I use these fins as a quad with the small ones close behind the big ones.

Increasing the size of the trailers gives more drive and directional stability.

I’m interested what you think of these fins as a quad setup, with 3,5" rear finnies it will be drivy too.

I can’t wait for the next episode,

Greetings from Sjoerd

...wait no longer !!

Today , I rode it with a pair of 'thommos' * [new name for the carbon fibre inlay 'hockey stick' fins] I made .

....as you say , more drivy , stable , and it felt better in the couple of forehand cutties I managed to get in on a couple of rights. The waves were still small, but at least they were smoother faced than yesterday . And , there were no shark sirens going off today , thankfully.

Anyways , yesterday I templated a smaller version of your carbon fin , on each carbon fibre panel ..... to be used as back quad pairs . I also had room to do another pair of the small blue trailers .They should look okay in carbon fibre , methinks !

  stay tubed ...er... tuned !

  cheers !

   ben

* after Mark Thompson , [Dan's dad] , Greenough's neighbour , and the early proponent / designer of hockey fins , back in the day [from what I gather]

Wow, that’s good to hear,

You’ve got me interested in these Thommos fins!

Something I had in mind before the sky fell on my head and I forgot a few things.

If they glow in the dark,

Would they go faster?

B.T.W., where can I find the pictures that go with the story!!!

Eagery awaiting the next post!

Cheers,

Sjoerd

re: the hockey / 'thommo' fins ...

I have carbon fibre ones , glo ones , blue tint ones , black pigment ones [cut down glassons]...WHICH  would you like , Sjoerd ?

I guess if I did carbon fibre ones for you .... do you  have another set of the large twinny carbon fibre template you sent me , so's you would have a set of four c.f. fins ?

anyways , let me know eh ?

re: photos ....

I'll need to upload all these photos [on disc] onto 'Photobucket' soon , hopefully I 'may' have access to the computer which lets me , hopefully either tomorrow or friday ?

meanwhile ...here are some template shots for you , mate !

  enjoy ....

[at the risk of 'hijacking' my own thread hahahahhh

p.s. -  here's my  quickest solution for making 'Thommos' / 'hockey stick' fins.... a cutdown F.C.S. 'M7' template

Hoi Chipper,

I’m looking for 3.5" or 4" Tommos fins.

Having surfed the FCS twinfins I wanted some more flex to improve control.

That’s why I started messing around with carbon and resin.

It’s moulded. That’s how the flexcontrol is done, one finmodel with so many flex characteristics…

And yes, I have more, but the flex can be slighty different.

Some flex very different, luckily, because I gained a few Kg’s in weight and had to take a different fin to find the drive again.

I had this one in store, on the bottom in the right are the Chipfins.

But a real photog like Ben can do better!

Hasta luego!

such good thread – you two are crazed in the very best way! good to see you posting sjoerd! post some boards or tell me where to see your latest turtles!!

groooovy Sjoerd !

thanks for posting those mate , you’ve got some funky stuff going on there , great to find someone doing different stuff. My fins will be stiffer and heavier than yours of course , being they are not moulded , but if you’d like to try a few funky ones , I’d be STOKED and honoured to send you some . I love your work , mate , keep it up !!

cheers

ben

here , finally , are a few shots of the fins you sent me …

Yes Ben,

These are the photoos I meant, NICE!

I would love to try some of your creations,

especialy some small sideys 3,5" or 4".

I have my own “Thommos” big fins cooking for so long now,

time to finish these this winter I hope.

I now use an other fin for more drive,

It felt a bit stiff in the turns at first, but a bit more force compensated for that.

These I use as trailers now.

Janklow, nice to hear from you again, no new boards, soon  I hope.

I have to move some more moutains first.

great stuff , thanks for the photos mate !!

VERY similar to the ones I made recently [thanks for using the grid for scale , by the way !!

so I'll probably need to send you 'glo' hockeys' / 'thommos' methinks ? [they are around 4" deep , small tipped]

cheers and keep up the experimenting Sjoerd !

  ben

p.s. - oops I nearly forgot ?! ...I used the lil blue one tabbers as lil sideys in my 9'4 mal yesterday , with a 7 1/2" smoky coloured back fin in the finbox. got some CRACKER little peeling [mainly] lefts with just two mates out ....it was SOOOOO much fun !!l

Great to hear you’re having fun!

I’m very interested in a set of “hockey” fins! 3.5" or 3.75" is my favorite size,

but if the surface is realy small they can be bigger.

That would be a good reason to surf again in the cold overhere.

Cheers Ben and keep your mind open so new thoughts can fly in!

Sjoerd

hi again Sjoerd !

here's a shot or two of the [rough cut out of the ] smaller carbon inlay fin set I made , to go with the big twinnys you sent . They are yet to be foiled and tabbed , obviously , but I thought you 'may' be interested to see what I've done so far , anyway ?

  cheers matey !

…please ensure brain is engaged BEFORE putting mouth into gear …

That’s a bright tip! I love it, can I borrow it?

Eeeehhhr, Very nice copy/paste work.

I’m interested what this new way can do for you and your surfing.

There are maybe some rabbit ear shaped quad trailers laying around here somewhere.

Could those help you in the search for “the speed of light”.

Just a “luminous” thought from an earthling.

A day without a new invention is not a day at all!
