has anyone here SEEN this band live ??

[I ask , because .....

   cheers !

  ben

they are also playing at Peats ridge festival (central coast, nsw) over new years. Cant wait!

sounds bloody cool. 2 of my old favourites. im sure this gig is gunna go orf

I reckon that'd be an epic show for sure - Brian Ritchie! Go that big double bass Guitar. I saw the Femmes three times back in the evil ol' '80's.

Ritchie lives in Tasmania, of all places!

Dance muthafucker dance...

JD

Wedding Cake Island.

Emotive, haunting, 80's flashbacks to rental living in Bondi.

that show looks like it's gonna be good Chip!

i saw the Violent Femmes around 2000 at the Filmore West.

that show ROCKED! Brian Ritchie did some of the songs with (from memory) a single string bass?! just tearing it up... the crowd was awsome for that show. i got 2 big guys to launch me at the stage. i was sure i was gonna make it. security was on it tho. they caught me midway and just dropped me on the floor then took me out the back.

took you out the back and did WHAT to you ?????!!!!

I'm hoping to be able to get a camera in there , so I hope it's a stand up and rage gig , not a sit at tables one .... [tommy emmanuel was a sit down one , so I never got to photograph him , unfortunately ?!

I spent 81 and 1982 photographing bands when I worked at Kodak . Just wish I still had all those photos .....

yep , "wedding cake island" does it for me ....'selinas',  coogee bay.... nights to remember .....

ha ha, nothing serious…

just took me out the back and told me to go around to the front entrance again.

lame, anticlimactic story i know… but, i remember being so stoked i was gonna get on stage then, security came out of nowhere and shut that down quick =)

hey ben are these guys getting together now. would be great

hiya Paul !!

good to hear from ya , thanks for the reply , matey !yep , I'm seeing them at the gig advertised

I recently saw them on the "spicks and specks" channel 2 programme

  cheers

yeeehaaaa !!

they went ORRRFFFFF , BIG time !!

and yep , the support band , 'day of the dead' , ALSO did surf instrumentals , but they were more in the style of DickDale surf guitar.  I got photos of BOTH bands .

Yep , the break did 'wedding cake island' , still an AWESOME track after ALL these years [the guy next to me shouted out "I was only two years old at the time" ...poor kid , missed out on the Oils at their PEAK eh ?

  The Breaks cd is called...

  .......

......

WAIT FOR IT.....

"church of the open sky"

and the tracks are named after famous surf breaks .

needless to say , they had a fair bit of surf footage showing on the wall behind them while they played !!

...the thing that really struck me about this gig ...

everyone , band AND audience , was having SOOOO much FUN !!

[the  way a gig should be , I reckon !!]

I cant believe how old all of them look !

On Sunrise they had the Hoodoo gurus and the front guy is totally bald and looks like Flacco.

Matt Finish played What About Me, at half speed, and looked set to stop and have a lie down half way thru.

And The Angels got on and Doc Neeson looks like my great aunt, all fat and puffy, too much makeup and a glittery shirt ?

When youre that fat no shade of black is slimming.

And he used to be a ringer for Mel Gibson.

Are we all that old or is it just them ?

flacco and doc....

?????????????????????????

is Matt Moffitt still in oz then ?

or do you mean "Moving Pictures' , perhaps ? [it IS aGary Frost / Alex Smith song after all ]...

If Matt Finish re-formed , I'd definately LOVE to see them !!

they , the oils , and the sunnyboys were probably my three favourite live bands in the early 80s in my sydney gig seeing days .....

And right there, is proof positive that I too, am getting old. Chips you are right of course about Moving Pictures.

I couldnt believe how old and slow they all look, at least their alive, pity about James Freud buying the farm recently, boy he had the world at his feet back in the 80's didnt he ??

Just cant get over how much makeup Doc Neeson was wearing, like an alky drag queen.

not that theres anything wrong with that....

Angry and Peter Garrett still look the same, might be the similar hairstyles.

Do any you guys remember a blues guitarist by the name of John Heussenstamm? Played in Aus in the 80's.

BAD!

hey Tim, i'm looking forward to seeing Buddy Guy when he's in town in April! woo hoo!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuRhaDrnlWo

hi surf4fins !

tell me , was john heussenstamm also a Newport [cali] local in the 1980s , too ? [ I seem to remember that name from mag photos , but I may be wrong ....]

hey surffoils ,

ARE Matt Finish getting back together ??? ..... I ask , because I saw them on I think it was "hey hey it's saturday [??] a year or two back , playing a new song .....

meanwhile ...

 here's  brian ritchie , again ....

BLOG9092.jpg

[ I put up some shots on 'The Break's facebook page too, by the way ...they've got some good shots there from fans , under "the break and others" section [photos]

p.s. - yes , we are ALL older now !!  [consider for a moment that the Oils and a lot of other bands were playing in the mid to late seventies , so figure most of the lead singers were nearly in their maybe mid-twenties THEN  ...well..  if we do the maths , that makes them now at least .... years old eh ? [as my username[s] name would suggest , I was born in 1961 [which makes me heading towards "the big one" [birthday] soon]....

p.p.s ...james freud died ??

mate , he and the drummer were the CORE of my other favourite live band I photographed heaps . I hope sean kelly and the rest of the ex - 'Models' choose to  stay clear of the dreaded bottle , go on to do more GREAT music , and live long and healthy lives !

Hi Ben, I know nothing about Matt Finish, that was just me being senile. Sorry for the false start.

Yeah, James Freud topped himself aout a week ago. It was on the TV here, not a lot of details, something about being found in a hotel room and his battle with his demons..

In his day, with those chiselled cheekbones and 80's high hair, he was the epitome of cool. Not so much in his later years.

hi Chip,

those heussenstamm's are John's cousins.

Hi guys, I was looking for some Innegra so I emailed a guy, Damien, at Colan.com.au. I explained that I make boards and he sent me 20 metres of free Innega.

Free I tells ya !!!! ( insert hysterical cackling...)

And it arrived the next day !

 10 metres of 170 g (6oz?)

10 metres of 68 g (3 oz?)

Give it a shot guys, 20 metres is enough for a few boards. Let us know if you score !!
