I have a customer asking for the famous pink strip art Tom Carrol used to put on his boards around the 80’s. I searched on the net, but unfortunatelly I couldn’t find the mentioned one. If anybody could help me with some website or scanned pics I will appreciate a lot. I have a vague remembrance of how the board looks like, but I would like to make a loyal copy of this artwork. Thanks!
Yes the shape is nice just use real materials don’t make it like this pool toy! Amazing all the great shapers who have sold out to this Asian’s big factory rule the world mentality! I hear they get 50.00 a board. Their such sell outs for bucks! What happened to surfing and individuality? Yea let’s have exactly the same shape, the same color, bla bla bla there goes the soul! Maybe we should all surf the same to!
Howzit cuttie, I think you were misinformed about the commision these guys get, unless Surftech (if they are who you are talking about ) has changed there policy. I was with one famous shaper/ex-pro surfer when he opened his check from them and it was more like $20 a board. Aloha,Kokua
Word on the street here is 50.00 but then again that’s word on the street. Maybe one of the shapers who are being paid by them can tell us here on Sway? No names needed!

Most of those jumping on the Surftech bandwagon are doing the same thing they have always done… Following the herd.
Some got hoodwinked and the few who used to be individuals, didn’t want to keep shaping for a living and paid their dues saw the possibility of retirement money.
As for selling out…there is no such thing. The idea for those getting their income from making boards, surfing or retail is to get paid for your work. Thats not selling out. Just because some believe all the horsehocky spewed in surfing magazines about nostalgia, soul and whose who does not mean there is a word of truth in it.
The problem with surftech like most of the industry is the fact they they hoodwinked the public on half truths and untruths. That stuff was and is being sold as an improvement over what we had when in fact it’s nothing but old windsurfing tech hyped a different way. But…it’s no different than selling a tooth pick to your average surfer and telling him it’s the best board.
Like Bill Barnfield once say…people love hype. I don’t totally disagree. I think I would put it this way…people like to live in the fantasy world more than reality when it comes to surfing.
I find it a very personal experience and not one that can be conveyed easily. I love it and I love the craftsman end of it…but it’s probably an art that never should have made it into big business. Once you try and make a living from something, there is no choice but to try and make the most you can while you can. As long as your honest and give your customers more than they expect…all should be fine.
Good post. Were in a cottage industry this is why were getting screwed by no tariffs on surfboards from China, Thailand, Vietnam, etc. Were so small compared to most industries this is why we have no voice in our government. Sad hey!
Howzit reverb, Good question, when I was shown the check and paper work it just showed how many of his models were sold and the amount he earned. Now if French was screwing them on their commisions they wouldn't have any idea what they should get. But I think that after a while some one would question this and it might be grounds to void the agreement and make them stop producing their model. I know I wondered since the person had 3 different models with the company. Aloha,Kokua

Very true. Also…because no one challenges anyone in the water anymore. It used to keep order out there and a certain level of respect. Now…you have non experienced surfers feeling they have the right to be in the way on their new ding proof surftech right in the critical part of the lineup. It’s a pretend world today rather than simply a world made up by a few seeking the same feeling. Keep up with the Jones. So and so says a popout is new improved and better. It must be true.
You used to have to earn respect. Now you just buy it.

Kokua,
I have spoken to a few of them who have the deal. Their concern and rightfully so is this: How do they know how many are produced. Why are they only paid on the ones sold rather than the ones produced? There is no way to check up on Randy and Co with this and human nature in Business is me first you second.
I suspect they figure out how much a month will keep them quiet and pay that. Do the math. Even $25.00 a board is alot of dough for not that many surfboards. Mini fortunes could be made. At $50.00 it goes way over.
Howzit solosurfer, Maybe it’s time these guys got together and hired a good CPA to check the books. As for boards sold as opposed to boards made, commision is paid on boards sold.Aloha,Kokua
