Tom Sterne or other fin builders

Why use 30+ layers of 6oz. on a fin instead of less layers of thicker cloth?

Why use 30+ layers of 6oz. on a fin instead of less layers of thicker > cloth?>>>Because it works.Sure you can use different wts of glass,or even mat-uni-directional glass. >I’ve even made small sheets using patches from rail cuttings, crude, but if it’s all you got, you make it work. >The easy way to make a fin sheet is to get 2 or 3 fiberglass forsale signs and glue them together with some bi-directional glass inbetween the sheets.

I’ve seen guys do up fins out of aluminum stock years ago. We used to kid Pat about that because he did lots of repairs for guys and was known to drum up business with that ominous fin. No rules on what to use. The 6oz. cloth is pretty common in most builder’s shops, it is what many fin builders have used for years to achieve desirable flex and foil characteristics that are proven to work. A 30" roll of 6oz. cloth generates lots of waste once the laps are cut so I save all the scraps and sometimes piece fin panels together for smaller shapes. TS
