Why can’t we all just get along!!! WHY must ALL shapers have so much crap to say about other shapers? Jesus Christ what a bunch of egotistical BABIES!! How about this. You are ALL good at what you do. You ALL have talent. Just try dissagreeing without slaming because all it does is discourage your followers. All of us poor workers that glass, sand, polish and repair your fine works of art are taking a beating every day because of egotistical bullshit! Give us a break and get along or keep all the negative crap to yourselves! I truly like and appreciate all of the shapers I have glassed for and I think they are ALL extremely talented.

Leslie, I agree that I know of no other industry that has such fragile ego’s, myself included. But in my 40 years of doing EVERY aspect of board construction, I have seen the absolute lamest shapers trying to pass themselves off as knowlegible, experienced and accurate. The buying public is so uneducated in what it takes to really shape, they are so clueless as what is a good shape , mediocre or plain pisspoor. Therefore , when a potential client goes into the shaping room with a supposed hero of the GREAT WHITE FOAM and sees dust flying and a planer or surform gnawing away, they assume they are getting an experienced journeyman, who can create a truly good shape. From one offs to the masters waiting to be scanned at KKL, are literally THOUSANDS of substandard shapes floating in the line up. The handfull of real shaping craftspersons, are few and far between. “DUDE, I watched my boards being shaped” , so what! Credit where credit is due for the shapers that shape, but look at the mags, going back til’ the begining of time. Names that were here for but a short span, then gone forever. All it takes is a few hundred dollars for tools and some gullible friends and you are a shaper. NO schooling, NO certificate, NO experience. That is why the slamming takes place, I ate my share of the pile of shit for years by more experienced, established surfing craftspersons. It made me get good or get out, I chose to get my PHD in surfology and go for the long haul.
At some point there ALL just manmade pieces of c–p anyway! …follow your heart…if you do that you will NEVER go wrong. Herb.
Hey I’m a rank amateur who makes his own boards because I like too. I have sold boards to finance my addiction of surfing and making surf boards. Nobody has ever complained to me that their board does’nt work because I know better. At one time they were all my boards. The one thing making my own boards has shown me is there are a lot of boards out there by big name guys that are not that hot. Now, if I could only do a flawless glass job!>>> …follow your heart…if you do that you will > NEVER go wrong. Herb.

You will be missed!

The one thing making my own boards has shown me is there are a lot of boards out there by big name guys that are not that hot. Now, if I could only do a flawless glass job! ********************************************* Dude, you said a mouthful. I make my own boards because I love to do it. I make boards for friends with no pretense of being anything but a guy who loves to mow foam (and isn’t very good at it). However I will always take back a board if someone wants me to (no-one has as of yet). I wish I could make a glass job come out even CLOSE to what Herb puts out. It’s funny, I go into shops now and I examine the glass jobs more than the shapes themselves. I take my hat off to the unsung heros of the glass and sanding shops. That is an art in itself. Hope everyone gets some waves this week. Magoo
Well said Mr. Jim Phillips. And thank you Leslie for all of my fine glass > jobs while you were here. You will be missed! Golly Gee Spanky, Thanks for the fluff. I feel real bad about leaving. After three years of some screw ups and lots of humility I feel like I was really coming into my own at the craft of glassing. I’m quite sure the place is still “Functioning” without me. I’m missing the guys and ALL my shaper buds. By the way…SOme cool paddleboard spots here. Maybe even up some rivers! See Ya. I’m here and unemployed if anybody needs anything.

Thanks Gene. You have been an extremely pleasant guy to work with. Like I said. I’m here and unemployed and yes I may want a recommendation. There is a shaper outside of town here. Don’t know anything about him though.
Glassing is a piece of cake. It’s techique thats tough. Took me a couple years to get what I thought was good. I tried shaping and I pretty much sucked at it.
How would it be if you spend 20 or 30 years directing your energy at designing and building wave crafts for others , only to have some drug rehab, 12 step wanna be, non respirator wearing brain child , bang the shaped blank on the door jamb, not put your lams on, sand through the weave, miss aliened your fins, , etc. on and on. There are a lot of people in the process that can either enhance or destroy your work. On the other side of the coin some up and coming shapers overstep their experience level to boast their market to something they have not yet accomplished. Generalizations can go on and on and on. Sometimes the “bullshit” is the only direct way to control the competitive nature of mismanagement. It is kind of like the alpha male in the crowed line up. I think. Crazy! Isn’t it? Dysfunction or smooth running well oiled machine. I too agree : your skill and integrity will be missed. Where did you go anyway? You dropped off the face of Yanonali st. Good luck where ever you are.

After seeing the posts regarding your technique I am very curious. Please feel free to post any tricks, tips, or comments that would help the kook in the glass shop that I am at this stage in the game! Magoo

It’s amazing how the daily routine of resin and acitone affect your epiderm! I look like an eighteen year old super model again!!

I still feel real bad about it and I know I should phone up and talk the the Tiger for the real truth. Really Really sorry if I dished anyone. What I really learned the most from Yanonali St. is to Keep Thy Big Mouth Shut and do your work. Me especially.
I feel so bad for you being in Fort Bragg. I was there for a year and hated it. Your a good couple hours from the beach…did you move due to the military? Hehe, the 82nd Airborne guys are pretty nuts. If you want to see how quick the military can react, stop on the side of the road next to delta force. We used to time them for fun, man they’re quick. Don’t do it to often, they get really pissed by the third time. Anyway, good luck to you. I had the oppurtunity to meet some good people and lifelong friends there, so I guess it wasnt that bad!
A place like that is hard to be health in body or mind. “My point is”, Don’t hit yourself too hard. “OH, by the way” things are still the same, and probably will stay that way until the cow dries up. You’ll do fine. Just give yourself some Q time. Good luck sistah.
