Hey! First post & first board inquiry so… mercy & grace is much appreciated. Btw thanks for all the great posts & info on here. Here’s the dilemma, shaped a beat up blank for practice & it has turned out ok. So, I started my for real shape on a new eps blank. I got the Fred tool thinking it’d be easier. Maybe so but to my dismay, I may have over tucked the bottom rail. I was going for more of a 60/40 rail on a 5’8” puddle jumper type groveler. Seems to be at 50/50 apex with a wired flat area tucking into the bottom. There’s no more foam to turn the rail down more😭I’ll try & add a pic. Am I just screwed or is there a way I can recover. I know I can’t put foam back…I’m blaming the Fred tool. Would a board with an apex at 50 & super tucked ride like a dog? Thanks y’all from flatville Florida
the thickness seems ok to me
you could check the greenlight surfsuply railband chart and do the railband marks prior to shaping them so that you cut rails at the desired height.
in the begining is better to do rails by hand then with the machine in my personal opinion.
even if shaping with the machine railmarks help a lot in terms ot simmetry.
you marked the railbands right?
Thanks for the reply. I did mark tuck & rail bands. I think I messed up the bottom “double bevel” on the tuck. Went too far on the first one. I worked a little more on a second bevel…looks better I reckon. I was thinking maybe since I have a little wiggle room, I could flatten the outline & try to bring the apex down? Though I don’t want to mess the outline up
Too much for me. Take a sanding block and sand apex a little to make a little flat pannel. Use light pressure in one slow move nose to tail. Do same other side. Then turn your rail again with sand screen.
Edit: just look kazuma vid, do what he say.
Your pictures are confusing. Looking down the rail towards what?? Nose? Tail? It’s easy to harden the rail at the tail. Once you’ve done that, you can work toward the nose from the forward edge of the hardened tail. You’re skipping around too much. You’ll never get it straightened out that way.
Yeah, pics aren’t great & all are pointing towards the tail except the last one. Tail is good. It’s the apex of the mid rail being too high from over tucking the bottom I was concerned with. Tuck was kinda squared off as well. I did the bottom rail & contours first so when I started the top rail bands is when I noticed I jacked it up. I think it can be fixed. It’s just a matter of my amateur arse executing. Thanks!
Mark the bottom rail all the way around the board. Use a combination square. That line should be where you want the bottom rail line. Turn the rail from the deck down. Use a Surform or sanding block. I like to use a piece of 60# formed in my hand.
