I can’t help it. I was doing some visual research for a project I’m working on. I was looking for images of one of my all time favorite surfers- Tom Curren. I found this-

If I was to be compared to anyone I would want it to be Curren. He’s so smooth and fast. I love the way he surfs.
When I was a lot younger, I saw a shot of Gary Chapman at Honolua Bay doing a high speed dropped knee top turn. I always tried to do those kinds of top turns when I surfed big Laniakea. But that was a lifetime ago.
When I ride waves like the one in your photo I have a tendency to stand tall and drag a hand in the lip. Sometimes I let the lip break on my stomach. Then I watched Morning of the Earth and saw MP surfing like that at Kirra. I always like his wildness and style of surfing.

Nice video. When contemplating his board he says, “6-4…something that can handle a wide range…from 0 to 6 or 8 feet…” That sounds like my next board! I like the rounded nose too. At 4:26 you can see he has hatchet fins. I wonder who he’s working with? He’s obviously in Australia…maybe Mark Thompson? Daniel’s (TOMO) father?
Watching that video makes me realize why I like Curren so much. He’s like how I surf in my dreams. I can’t even dream of surfing like all the new school boys, doing all that aerial stuff, but in my dreams I surf like Tom.
The George in that video is Greenough. I think he may have been with Greenough and Derek Hynd on that trip. I’ve seen the video, my brother has it.
Wait a minute…this thread’s getting off topic. It’s supposed to be about me. Can Curren make water squirt out the top of his head while tooting his horn?
I think Mark Thomson and Greenough live right near each other in Oz. Read a story somewhere about about Daniel Thomson growing up with “Uncle George,” who Thomson later found out was this legendary guy from CA. See any resemblance here?
