When you put two layers of glass on top one wraps around the rail but where do you cut the other? It doesn’t wrap all the way around too, does it?
The first layer of glass should stop at mid-rail. You can just free lap it (no tape. The second layer then goes all the way around. For deck patches I cut them short of mid-rail, or just at the top lap-line, but I saw one Volan clear glassed board that had the deck patch wrapped all the way around, V-cut at both ends on the deck. Greenish shadow on all the double layers. It looked great. Doug
One thing though, if you are doing a color tint, wherever you stop the one layer you will be able to tell exactly where you left it and it will look sloppy. That’s the bitch about tints. I double wrap the rails!!! If you plan for this then you need to take the volume down an extra hair. Double wrapping is not to difficult. Though if you are not the strongest glasser, I’d reccomend using a UV catalyst, because you will need extra time to get the double wrap completely layed up Drew
i cut it so it hangs over the rail but does not wrap under
I do this too (Richard’s method). It’s not harder to soak out the laps, and it provides a bit more protection to the rails, where I tend to ding my boards the most (surfing crowded breaks is a bitch on the rails). I find it also helps keep the rail curve a bit more true to the shape.
