I love seeing the concave depth and thickness when good shortboarders start to shape...

mmmmmyeah my goal was your basic single to double concave into some vee panels off the tail. I was satisfied with the end result, nothing too drastic. The overall middle thickness is a bit more than I wanted but the foil looks good so I’m leaving it.

It’s taking too long to thin out the last 10" of the nose stringer on top. I need a spoke shave or one of them lil Japanese curved planer thingamabobs. Maybe a rat tail file/round rasp?

i just wanted to take my place in line and commend you on a great job!

i have yet to shape my first board and, like you, i don’t have a “shaping room”.

i had planned on doing a temporary one along the same lines as you…

thanks for this thread, it is very inspiring. the board looks great!

having used both I’d recommend the spoke shave over the japanese curved plane. And at that, I’ve had better luck with small spoke shaves than big ones (eg. Stanley). I believe Foam EZ sells the little ones, keep 'em nice and sharp!

Bud,

Nice work. You look like you took the time to set up everything just right. That makes it so much better once you get into the nitty gritty work. From what I’ve been seeing in your photos, I can’t see how that board won’t work. Now we get to see your surf photos and future board efforts too…cool! I think we have a mutual aquaintence in knowing Makani McDonald, seeing posts of you riding his boards. He actually shaped one of his early efforts a couple of years back in my sweat box of a shaping room. He’s come such a long way in a very short time. Excellent surfer too, well you know that. Look forward to seeing the finished product and how it performs.

sick thread , great photos , nice looking board .

" Needed to be semi-mobile/collapsible since I promised the Warden that she’d have her garage parking spot back within 6 months."

I take it that’s your wife ???

I wonder if she lurks in the background , watching what you type here ?

soon as you wrote warden , I had an insane vision of a massive rottweiler in uniform , pick axe in one paw , whip in the other ???

I hope that is not true in your case or when you bend over to fine tune the rails , you could end up a very sore shaper …

ben

and no , I do not imbibe …

you making fun of me , chipfish? you better not be making fun of me thar boy , or me and the other girls will come round and whip your a…

thanks for the offer , girl , but I don’t remember saying LEATHER. [ perhaps you could convert “rubberlove” , though , while you are “at it” ?]

Anyway , Bud [getting back on track now ] …what fins will you be going with on your board , and will you be doing any colour [spray , etc] ?

cheers ,

ben

nice work bud.

can you share the dimentions for the shaping stand peices?

Nice job Bud! -Carl

Great photos !

Keep up the good work and the warden will be just fine…

Watch out for those kids bikes and things , sometimes they bump into awesome boards like yours and whooops!

Yes! I’m honored to call Makani a good friend, a huge inspiration and one of the best surfers I know. He’s been shaping all my boards since he started. I hope to have him check this one out before i get it glassed

Not sure which fin system yet. Will talk with the glassers today. No art/color, might work on a simple logo though

nice work bud.

can you share the dimentions for the shaping stand peices?

Each Stand =

A = 2 @ 26" (2x4)*

B = 2 @ 21" (2x4)*

c = 2 @ 10" (2x4)*

D = 2 @ 5" (1x4)**

E = 2 @ 3" (2x4)**

F = bucket bottom (1/4" ply)**

G = 2 @ 10" x 1/2" hex bolts, nuts, washers ($4 total)

H = 1 @ 3-1/2" x 3/8" hex bolt, nut, washers ($1 total)

50lb bag Quickcrete post cement ($5)

5 Gal paint bucket ($4)

1" Foam padding & 14" cable ties **

*Three 8’ 2x4’s is more than enough to do both stands ($3ea)

** On hand or scrap pieces

For me, about $50 in materials for both stands, including $10 for the 12" drill bit

I made the top of the stand reach 36" (I’m 5’8") - With padding and the thickness of a blank this height works well for me.

The uprights could be made adujustable by drilling additional holes. I made corresponding marks on the floor and the buckets to center & level everything. Because my garage floor has a major slope away from the house I had to add small shims under bothm buckets (to level) and make the rear uprights taller (even tops). I used a 30 degree angle for cutting the upright rounding and the center post tops, then finished off with a surform & sandpaper (same for the crossbars).

Unless you have a drill press to bore the upper bolt holes, I found it best to line up the boards then clamp

them for drilling with a 12" x 1/2" Wood boring paddle bit. Make sure you keep backing the bit out of the hole to let the shavings escape.

I cut the round pieces of 1/4" plywood the size of the bucket to help prevent the bucket bottoms from bowing

from the weight of the cement.

Thanks to the members of www.swaylocks.com for ideas & guidance. -Bud

how much did it end up costing you?

I’d like to upgrade from my four buckets…

I just edited my previous post with some prices I paid.

Hey #1 is DONE!!

Thickness is meatier than I usually ride. If nothing else, this thing will catch waves! Was supposed to be Futures Fins but no biggie. Has the ‘new’ version FCS instead.

I learned a lot from this, it’s kinda funky but overall I’m pleased with the outcome of my first shape. Probably get it wet tomorrow surf permitting.

NUMBER 2 is ready to be glassed and came out much more to my liking :smiley:

great stuff , Buddy !

let us know how it rides, eh ?

and …I LOVE that shot with the dog !

[he has now become my new screensaver , he replaces this shot of my old shaper…]

cheers

5 years later and Bud’s are some of the cleanest boards I’ve ever seen.

Good on ya Bud!

Kids got talent that for sure,
