Thanks! Needed to be semi-mobile/collapsible since I promised the Warden that she’d have her garage parking spot back within 6 months. Long before then I’ll know if (I think) I’ve what it takes to make a few more. If that’s the case I have authorization to move the operation outside; make it larger & a bit more permanent.
Pretty stoked on how #1 is coming out so far. Gonna try to sneak some time to do the rails tonight
Wow! Bud that is sweeet!! The down side is that my wife saw it too, so now I have another project to do before I start my next board. Wish I would have done something like that before my garage looked like a blizzard hit it. The board shape is pretty sweet too. Have a blast. Oh ya, remember to thank the Warden repeatdedly. I think your permanent cave isn’t too far off. Have a blast. Spud
Right on Bud!!! Good to see you mowing some foam… If you need anything PM me… I’m here on Oahu too… Hurry up and finish your winter quiver or you may have to break the promise…Haha! Nice temporary set up!!!

Pretty much full jumping in with both feet on the shaping thing. Good to see it, catch the bug and you’ll never buy another board off the rack. Vac system, calipers, etc. Looks like you’ve been doing a little research…I hope you are going to do your own glassing too. Nuts to bolts the whole thing. Nothing better than pulling into a good wave on your creation, hitting a smooth bottom turn, little snap under the lip, little barrel and getting spit out…come out yelling “It works! it fricking works!” Everybody looks at you like some kind of freek…Big ol smile on your face that won’t go away…little do they know, you made something from nothing.
that all looks fantastic. I am amazed by your thorough, structured, patient and “clean” approach to everything so far. I’m sure your board will be a reflection of your preparation. Such a contrast to the way my first and only board was done (as well as many other Swaylockians I’m sure). Yours will be all the better for it too. Well done mate. Welcome to the joy of shaping and surfing your own board.
Btw, I won’t be doing any glassing, one of the local factories will get that job. My main concern was preventing a layer of fine white powder on the Warden’s clean laundry.
Next set of pics - just about done!
added some concaves, almost finished turning the rails. still gotta take down some humps and thickness and fine sand
Totally impressed! If you have set yourself up that well for shaping I’m sure you would absolutely nail it if you glassed as well. Maybe, next one. Very clean shape - i don’t think I’ve ever seen a hip (if that’s what you would call it) so close to the tail. Did you plane the rails at first or just use the surform from the start?

Thanks- Won’t say never, but I can’t see myself glassing.
I did the rail ‘bands’ with a surform, then cleaned them up with screen then sandpaper

I said NEVER, No Way, No How, To Pilau!!! I have since glassed 10 boards… I’m so freaking impatient waiting for glassers! I just started another one yesterday and I plan on surfing it at dawn on Friday with that new South coming in… Ahwoooooooooooo!!! As far as glassing goes… I STILL SUCK!!!
in those pictures there isn’t a spec of dust or a thing out of place. Even the pictures you took at the midway point, everythings clean and tidy.
With that type of cleanliness and attention to detail, glassing should be cake for you. Just your nature and the way you work will eliminate the majority of problems with glassing. Things most of us have learned the hard way, you already know. Go for it!
