Traditional Loggers- Question

for all of you that ride logs with 50/50 rails and rolled v in the tail.

how do you not get bored surfing a board with so much drag? if you put an edge in the tail and made the bottom flat, the board dwould go 100 times faster, you know? don’t you ever feel like turning?

im from the west coast of canada and the waves only get suitable for a traditonal log a few tiems a year. by that i mean really small and clean with no room for turning.

so why not ride a more mod board?

-symph.

Uhhh,

I have no problem turning a board you describe. In fact I have made several of them. Some mlots of Vee, some less. had I pics, I would post.

Turn a board many ways you can

Drew

I can easily turn all of my 50/50 rail, rolled tail boards. I do not like hard rails in the tail, except on my bigger/faster wave boards, which I only get to surf like 3 or 4 times a year, because the area that I surf only get really big and too fast, and still clean enough to surf my “logs” that often. I can and do ride my classic 60’ model Lance Carson in surf well over head, of course these are reef breaks, and point breaks which are very well suited for these boards.

This summer I surfed my 11’3" board that fits your description. It was a blast. It took me several day to get the hang of turning it (I had to relearn surfing), but once I old schooled it I could surf it in most conditions. I definantly wouldn’t want it to be my only board, but I can’t imagine a longboard quiver without one.

you don’t have to turn you can noseride, or try to and have a ton of fun. plus if it is slow it can just sit in the pocket and noseride better than something that just tries to out run the wave.

with that type of board, it’s all about hanging TEN…A solid hang ten is still the most prestigious manuver for a longboard, and the rider that can pull one (toes over), is in the top of his class that day anyway…

Of course no one should limit themselves to that ‘traditional’ only vein, but they do, i know.

In my neck of the woods, people are already doing the fish/bonzer thing, but I’m here in San Diego where Tudor, Kevin Connelly, Skip Frye, and many other A grade longboarders have already spread their wings back to shorter hybrids a while back…lifes to short to be narrow minded everthing has some fun to it…like this guy ------

  1. i hear you say drag, but all i feel is the glide.

  2. bored? that word shouldn’t even be associated with surfing…and especially not with log riding. if you need something more exciting, try being a crash test dummy…i hear it’s exhilerating.

  3. if you put an edge in the tail and made the bottom flat, the board would outrun the wave and the tail wouldn’t lock in for a trip to the tip…so what’s the point? style is more important than speed. if i wanted speed, i’d ride something with a flat bottom, and maybe a hard down rail. i could go out and buy a turbo charger and a nitrous oxide setup for my toyota matrix, and i’m sure the turbos and a 50 shot of NOS would make it go faster…but what’s the point?..if i wanted to go fast, i’d have bought a sports car.

  4. lotsa tail kick makes turning a breeze. and it’s fun to drop a knee or fade it off the curl. seems like you’re the only one who has trouble turning a log. bad technique, perhaps?

  5. i’m from south florida, and the waves only get suitable for traditional logging a few times a decade…doesn’t make me love it any less. and get off this “no turning” thing you’ve got stuck in your brain. i don’t know where you got it from, but it seems to be one of the key flaws in your whole mindset.

  6. why don’t we all just go out and by Kelly Slater clones? maybe we can even get them as pop-outs!!! newer doesn’t mean better. and IMHO, “progressive” longboarding simply has no appeal. if you want to surf faster and more aggressively, ride a shortboard. pumping down the line and launching off the lip on a 9’+ board is just stupid to me. and while you’re doing that, i’m gonna go hang ten on my CI Flyer.

yeew! go soulstice go!

The best thing about logs is feeling the glide and speed as you step forward and cruise.

Drag? haven’t even noticed it!

mmmmmmm

nice fade!

Well done Chippy!

Drew

It is all about the cruising and the noseriding. Riders like Tudor show us how it is done smooth and stylish. I have riden traditional logs and the modern ones the trditional shapes by August and the Greek are the best I have riden. If you want to smash the lips ride a biscuit.

Fade. Turn, set up, walk, walk back, turn, turn. Turn, set up, walk, walk back, turn, turn.

Repeat as space allows.

Boring? Who brought the troll?
