Transition era V-bottom

Spotted at the beach recently: 8’ something V-bottom with lots of belly in the nose, wide tail single fin. Cool old Bing.

That’s a really odd looking tail, even for that period. Almost looks like a cut down LB.
What did it have for a fin, box or glass-on?

Bing is on Facebook and he kept all his old order info. I bet he could tell you the story behind the board.
Is that a tapered stringer or the photo angle?

Tapered stringer - Yes

Wave Set fin box, he’s looking for a fin

Wish I could’ve gotten better pics

The transition period?
Guess that is politically correct.
I still refer to that time as “The Revolution”.
An amazing time when things changed almost overnight.
Then monthly, it seemed.
But a lot of guys had nothing but longboard blanks.
And some wide tailed deep V could be done, most where awful.
I could go on about how many nice logboards, ah, got recycled.
Bing was no different with what was on hand.
Trying to place that tapered stringer blank.
My initial thought was Nuuhiwa lightweight pintail, late (?) as the first had a mini reverse tee band.
Can’t see anything on Bing’s site.
Just an Olpharts memory.
Gotta go…
Damn it where are my keys ???

Funny
I been losing things lately.
Just not my mind.

That pintail’s a beauty. Clean, simple, elegant.

Definitely looks like it was cut down and they were trying to replicate the Bing Vincent model. Not to many of those were made. Contact Bing for the info on it or John Leninger (Rick and Becker Surfboards).

Sorry Huck, about any high jacking….
Would anyone like to know more about the Vee?
The board that started it…
More upon request.
I really don’t know it all
however, I do know enough to be dangerous.

If it has an original Waveset box, then it wasn’t cut down. Plus, the Vincent came out in 1970, a good two years after this type of V bottom appeared. Also, the Vincent was a square tail with little to no V. In fact, this board looks nothing like the Vincent.

Yes. That’s a McTavish V bottom. Looks like one of his personal boards.

I told the owner of the board, who is interested in selling it, to log in at Swaylocks and post some pics. He said he was looking for a WaveSet fin, and some information on the best way or place to sell it, and I told him he would get some advice here. But he hasn’t posted anything up yet, so maybe he lost interest.

I just posted the pic for its historical aspect, as there has been a resurgence of interest in midlength V-bottom boards, and to facilitate discussion of this design. So any and all comments are welcome.

The owner can contact Bing directly if he wants to know more about it. If he can find the serial number, even better. Bing still has the records of damn near every board that bore his logo.

Sammy A is correct!
Bing kept good records along with Rich Harbor.
Yes that is the “spin out special” that McTavish rode at the Sunset contest.
Everybody thought it was a joke…
Weber commented on watching the “Aussie’s” at Haleiwa,
“somethings up”, later, we saw Nat Young at Honolua, ripping on a pieced together Vee?
It was on!!!
Stringer less “Farrely style” blanks where the rage.

You could not make them fast enough.
The Big guys tried, (like the Bing) but board advancement became so fast
only the underground really could keep up.
I rode 3 Vee’s
Only loved 1, and I mean LOVE, wow what great times!!!
